Kembe X and Alex Wiley have a mission to get down to SXSW this year. We’re proud to support that mission and in that spirit present their new EP, Can I Borrow A Dollar? It’s a nod Common’s LP of the same name, is six songs deep, and definitely shows their worthiness of gracing some stages out in Austin. They are celebrating the release with a fundraising party right now at The Bassment (1415 N. Ashland). Download the new EP below, and also check out what Kembe and Alex told us about this new drop. They also hinted at some new Village gear by Chicago brands Ambition Chicago and Ricchezza. They’ll have tees on-sale at The Bassment.

RubyHornet: What pushed the sudden release of “Can I Borrow A Dollar” EP?
Kembe X: Once we picked up the sets (SBG Movement and Hustlepalooza) at SXSW we thought we should drop like an EP. We were at a countdown of a month until SXSW, and we were trying to figure out how to raise funds. Gen was like “The easiest way to make a million dollars, is to ask a million people for a dollar.” Then the homie Wes (London Wes or St. Ghoul) was like, “Call it Can I Borrow A Dollar… Like the old Common album.” Everybody was like hell yeah, and it stuck from that night.
RubyHornet: How do you feel about the EP since there were time constraints?
Kembe X: I mean, the EP is like this, it’s not our best songs, but it is a tape of good ass songs. Shows people who we are. The Village. 777. YOLO NATION.
Alex Wiley: It’s hella us “wrappin” good, but not our best stuff. Our full length tape is gonna be better and shit.
