Higher Learning

I’ve been championing the music of Fashawn since my first listen a couple years ago.  I think his debut LP, Boy Meets World, was one of the best of 2009, and seriously slept on.  The kid is wise beyond his years, and has been mentored by some of the West Coast’s best in the form of Evidence, Alchemist, Exile, Babu, Aloe Blacc and others.  This song with J. Cole, “Nothing For The Radio” is Fashawn at his best, as he has always maintained a sociological slant in his lyrics, focusing on his past in group homes growing up in Fresno.  While J. Cole is a bit more mainstream, he too focuses on urban poverty and strife in many of his best joints.  The two form a great musical pairing on “Nothing For The Radio”.  Download it below, and look for Fashawn’s new mixtape, Higher Learning 2 to be released later today via XXL.
