First images from the Mr. Peabody & Sherman adaptation now available

It’s been two years since Mr. Peabody & Sherman was first announced with The Lion King director Rob Minkoff directing a script written by the dreadful Yogi Bear adaptation’s screenwriters, Jeffrey Ventimilia and Joshua Sternin. Since then, Robert Downey, Jr. was cast as Mr. Peabody, the all-knowing genius dog from the Rocky and Bullwinkle spin-off cartoon, Mr. Peabody’s Improbable History, just to drop out of the project and replaced by Modern Family‘s Ty Burrell a year later.

Updates have light on the film until recently when this first batch of images was released. Outside of modernizing the characters for the new century and making Sherman look dopey with the buckteeth, the characters stay true to the cartoon. The film’s plot revolves around Sherman traveling back in time using Mr. Peabody’s WABAC machine and accidentally changing the course of history. It’s up to the duo to fix any mistakes made.

Mr. Peabody & Sherman is definitely going to attract families and little kids, but I kind of have light hope that there’ll be some appeal for adults. After all, the whole line of Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoons were very tongue-in-cheek to begin with.
