Lou Reed

After a few months of being lazy, I finally started getting back in the gym on a consistent basis.  Armed with built up energy and a my iPod, I’ve been spending a lot of hours running, and working out.  Throughout these sessions I keep my iPod on shuffle, listening to some songs that I hadn’t heard in years. I decided to re-up some these tracks for one simple reason: They are great songs and I feel they deserve another look.  These tracks that I love, both for their sound, their themes, and even the memories they bring up.

Today I’m going to post up “Walk On The Wild Side” by Lou Reed.  The song appears Reed’s 1972 LP, Transformer, with production handled by David Bowie.  The song is a vivid tale of NYC’s underbelly, and at the time, caught a lot of flak for touching on the subjects of drug use, sexuality, and race through the slow moving narrative.  Many Hip Hop heads will recognize the record immediately, as it also served as the heart of “Can I Kick It” when A Tribe Called Quest sampled it for their first album.  I was listening to music the other day when “Walk On The Wild Side” came on, and I thought it was “Can I Kick It” until the beat never dropped.  No disappoint though, this song is dope.  Listen below.
