Illinois Boy Jack Larsen’s creative spring continues to pump out new and interesting songs and videos with the release of his latest single “I Became My Brother”. Over the last 6 months Larsen has recorded/directed/filmed/stared in 3 of the most ethereally nostalgic music videos of the year. He has his finger on the pulse of a nostalgia that is too young to be nostalgia, pulled from pop-culture, technological devolution and his own personal memories. As a director there are emerging trends in his style. Some of the tricks he consistently uses is to mix HD modern footage with cuts from an out dated camera, creating a distant-present effect. He also seems to like creating grotesques of himself by distorting his body. In the video for “I Became My Brother” we see Jack’s perspective throughout the song. The opening scene shows Larsen drinking tea, looking in a mirror, but then he looks down and we enter his head. Literally because the next cut is just his head singing. The video continues with various distortions that match the lyrical content they are synced with. Watch the full thing below.
