As we all gear up for Pitchfork Music Festival this weekend, we must take a step back and remember all that went down this week.  The last 7 days was certainly one for the books, especially when considering the long awaited release of When Fish Ride Bicycles that happened on Tuesday. This edition of Local Sounds includes a healthy dosage of news, tidbits, and music from a wide array of local artists including, The Cool Kids, L.E.P. Bogus Boys, Million $ Mano, Rockie Fresh, Sulaiman, Common, No I.D., Skooda Chose, Naledge, Add-2, Kids These Days and more.

In Case You Missed It – Local Sounds 7/8/11

With their big day finally coming to reality, The Cool Kids hosted an album release party at Reggie’s Rock Club on Tuesday night to celebrate the release of their debut album When Fish Ride Bicycles, which debuted at #1 on the iTunes Hip-Hop charts.  Featuring, mini-burgers, chicken wings, beers, good people and good music, word on the event was that it was one of the best listening parties we’ve seen in Chicago for a while. In good spirits, we caught up with Mikey & Chuck for a quick interview. While they were excited for the release, the reality still hadn’t hit them that their album was actually out. Look for a feature on the two coming soon right here on RH. Others in attendance included Million $ Mano, L.E.P Bogus Boys, Sulaiman, Hollywood Holt, Skooda Chose, & many more industry Chicago peeps. Speaking of L.E.P., aside from making appearances at Jadakiss & Fabolous’s shows in Chicago, The Bogus Boys recently visited Mobb Deep in Queensbridge to shoot a video for the tracks “Gangstaz Only.”

We’ve also learned that Million $ Mano & Mic Terror have a new anthem in the works, serving as somewhat of rebuttal to the “Natural High” track created for our Closed Sessions ATX project. Keep on a look out for that, as well as the official video for “Natural High”.  While recording in Chicago has ceased for Common and No I.D., he, Dion and Nas were showcased this week in the making of “Ghetto Dreams” video, remarking on each others career, and Common’s upcoming LP The Dreamer, The Believer.

After a solid release for their debut EP Hard Times, Kids These Days headed to Summerfest in Milwaukee for a show, definitely serving as good preparation for their set at Lollapolooza which is only 3-weeks away!

After peeping behind the scenes shots for the Ski Beatz song “You Already Know” featuring GLC and Stat Quo it became apparent the influence Chicago has on Ski’s upcoming 24-Hour Karate School II project. Looking at the tracklist, GLC, Mikey Rocks, L.E.P. Bogus Boys and Freddie Gibbs are all set to appear on the August 9th release.

New Music & Videos

Young stars Casey Veggies and Chicago’s own Rockie Fresh released visuals for the track, “Dockin’ & Dodgin'” Off Rockie’s The Otherside Redux coming July 27th. Rockie also dropped the audio for “Sofa King Redux” which previously was only in video format. Chicago MC Add-2 was featured on MTV2 Sucker Free Countdown and spit a clean 16 in front of the Jordan statue at the UC.

In a somewhat surprising manor Sulaiman & Gzus dropped a mixtape titled What Music Should Sound Like, a collection of 10 songs, 6 being previously unreleased. You may recall “Love Me Sexy” featuring Million $ Mano, Jon James and Mic Terror from our project with Mic, Can I Borrow A Feeling.  Other features include Vic Spencer and Swopes, with production from Nez & Rio, Tony Baines, SC, Matteroffact, and Statik Selektah.

Kidz In The Hall continued their MTV web-series with episode 6, “Here Now” and are readying their headlining show at Reggie’s, Thursday night featuring Vic Mensa and sounds by DJ RTC, Vic Lloyd,i ibhappy, and Zzaje. Naledge also was featured on local spitter Skooda Chose’s new track “We Gone”.

Another great week in the budding scene here in the Chi, which was highlighted by the positive release of When Fish Ride Bicycles, and preparation for this weekend Pitchfork Festival.
