Don’t Miss Last Weeks – Local Sounds:8/19/11

Kanye West is unquestionably standing on top of the world at this point as Watch The Throne has captured the ears of millions across the globe. However, earlier this week, Kanye got news from home that he and Jay-Z were being sued by legend Syl Johnson for not clearing a sample used on “The Joy”. Syl spoke to NBC 5 Chicago about the incident and had this to say in the clip, “But I think Kanye West, kind of, he blew it. Because he knows me, he knows my daughter, Syleena Johnson…” Let’s hope this situation settles itself, as there is really no need for petty in-state beef from such talented and iconic local musicians like Kanye and Syl.

YP has been trending as of late, as the local MC is ready to unleash his anticipated project Still Awake to the world on September 13th.  According to plenty of industry sources the project is very solid, and is just what YP needs as he readies for the biggest year in his musical career.

Last Saturday we were graced by the good folks at Mad Decent as they made their way to a wet Chicago for the second annual Mad Decent Block Party. Featuring BBU, Bosco Delray, Lunice, Curren$y, Dillon Francis & More, the event finished as a success, despite early weather related worries.

New Music & Videos

Rockie Fresh

Another very dope Chicago MC will be dropping a project on the 13th, as Lungz hit us with his single “Clouds” Feat. Sir Michael Rocks off the Don Cannon hosted DreamKillaz project presented by RubyHornet, Fakeshoredrive, LDRS1354, and The Bassment. Local spitter Calez, who has seen more national acclaim as of late, released his track “Ultrasound” earlier in the week – showing a consistency in quality material for the young MC.

GLC has found his stride at the end of the summer.  And released his second offering in as many weeky by dropping I Know You Pimped Last Summer. GL is working extremely hard perfecting his craft, and was in the studio earlier this week with Tye Hill. Expect a lot more music from The Church as the Fall progresses.

While we wait for Rockie‘s upcoming project and his first single off of it, “No Fear“, the young artist released a new song called “Breakthrough”, which features rap veteran Chamillionaire. With Rockie on the brink of a major career breakthrough, Chamillionaire gives the young MC a few tips on how to handle himself.  The production on “Breakthrough” comes from Mike Daley. Rockie is currently on tour with Fall Out Boy’s Patrick Stump, which wraps up on the west coast very soon.

Gary, Indiana based rapper G-Scott recently dropped visuals for his track “Folded” directed and edited by the talented crew over at Young Wonder. Charlie and I actually were able to make it out for this shoot, I have to say, it was one of the more original ideas we’ve seen for a video all summer, by setting up shop in an active laundromat. Don’t miss this. Shoutout Chandler of Young Wonder and the homie Ty from Fakeshore.

While Kidz In The Hall prepare their fall project, Xaphoon Jones of Chiddy Bang decided to drop his own take on their single “Break It Down”. Proving again, he is one of the best young producers in the game. Pugs Atomz recently linked with BrandUn DeShay for “All Right” off of Pugz next LP titled Enjoy which is due September 9th.

After another solid week in the local scene, Tonight we at RH are celebrating at The Mid for our Questlove show feat. Rude 1 & DJ RTC. Tix are only $15.00 for legendary composer, so don’t miss this one. If you’d like to contribute something to Local Sounds, just hit us up on Twitter, Facebook, or send an email to seanck@rubyhornet.com . Happy Weekend!
