Into the second week of September, we were lucky enough to have two artists drop very solid mixtapes setting the stage for a strong fall for the city of wind. Lungz & YP, two of the citiy’s rising stars released DreamKillaz & Still Awake, respectively, with positive acclaim from local and national outlets in the Hip Hop scene. Yet, don’t let these two prominent releases fromg Lungz & YP mask other news and drops from artists like Lupe Fiasco, Common, Sir Michael Rocks, Kidz In The Hall, Freddie Gibbs, Kanye West, Rhymefest, Add-2, The Primeridian, Rockie Fresh, Twilite Tone, DJ 33 1/3 and BJ The Chicago Kid.

Earlier in the week, Common stopped by The Jon Stewart Show promoting his new book “One Day It All Makes Sense” and also reminiscing about the beef that Fox News had with the “Gangsta Rapper” earlier in the year. Common explains when he first heard about the negative remarks made against him, while also divulging some personal details related to his new memoir. While at North Coast Festival, GoWhereHipHop caught up with Lonnie to speak on his hometown, and the cohesion he has with producers and friends No I.D. and Twilte Tone who made an appearance ( also DJ’d Com’s set).

Common was also spotted in leaked footage of Kanye and Rhymefest’s scrapped puppet comedy show “Alligator Boots”, equipped with a classic Kim Kardashian scene. Kanye has always been the ultimate jack of all trades, and rumor has it that Kanye will present his first ever Women’s line at this year’s Fashion Week in Paris on October 1st. More details to come if there is any truth to this.

Kidz In The Hall have announced their fourth studio LP The Occasion will drop November 22nd, and will feature David Banner, Esthero and the Chicago’s own Vic Spencer.

While on the road for the Generation Lasers tour, Lupe Fiasco announced a  5-year anniversary special edition of Food & Liquor this Tuesday, which will feature 4 bonus songs and 2 new videos. Word has it that Lupe is working on his newest mixtape Friend of The People and it is due November 24th. Yes. If we get new Lupe and Common this fall/winter then all is good in the in the game for me. The Special Edition release is on iTunes right now!

Sir Michael Rocks continues his twitter promotion for his upcoming projects Premier Politics 1 & 2 and Rocks & Blocks with Boldy James, which also includes a Bussin’ Down instructional video . Mikey states that we can expect a Premier Politics release by the end of the month. Definitely expect a big fall from Sir Michael as he continues to prove he is simply not just a cool kid.

We have some new news from Their Ocean, the psych indie duo that emerged quickly last spring with their acclaimed EP Still Waters.  The band will be releasing a new EP this fall, in preparation for their debut LP in 2012.

New Music & Videos

On Tuesday Lungz released his long-awaited DreamKillaz mixtape, hosted by Don Cannon (Check our Interview). The mixtape features Sir Michael Rocks, Araab Muzik, Joe Budden, Fred The Godson and more.  This is a new step for Lungz, and hopefully the start to a new level of success in his career.  This tape has been in constant rotation this week with “Memories”, “L.I.O.N”, “Clouds”, and “Make Money” seeing multiple repeats on the iPod. Lungz x Don Cannon x Sean Mac celebrated the release on Wednesday, and you can check the recap video here shot by Writers Wednesday.

YP has been lurking throughout the blogosphere, twitterverse and ultimately every other relevant medium in today’s Hip-Hop game, polishing his skills all leading up to the No Sleep follow-up, Still Awake. the Timbuck2 directed mixtape features YP’s standout radio single “Who I Be”(Video) as well as features from King Louie and Big Homie Doe. While most of the tape features a solo YP, he nabbed a very strong producer list, with beats from The Olympicks, Brandun Deshay, Thelonious Martin, Tony Baines, The Cartoonz, Chuck Inglish + More.

In this busy mixtape week we also re-issued the historic Tone B. Nimble & DJ 33 1/3 Tone & Tom Mixtape Vol. 2. Check the post for more info + download

Freddie Gibbs is posted right around the corner, as he readies the Cold Day In Hell project, he’s been holding on to it since June. This week he smacked the game in the face with “187 Proof” produced by the Justice League. Expect a lot of noise from the CTE x Str8 Slammin clique this fall with TM103 on the way, look for Gangsta Gibbs on your TV screens.

Rockie Fresh released the new single and visuals for his upcoming mixtape titled Driving 88. The song titled “No Fear” is The Gift, 1/2 of the production duo The Cartoonz, and samples Civil Twilight’s “Letters From The Sky”.  Lookout for the tape later this fall.

BJ The Chicago Kid popped up with a mixtape in collaboration with DJ Ill Will, which is something we can never complain about. BJ seems like he’s been on everyone’s album lately, and hopefully the tape titled,  The Live of Love’s Cupid further promote the notoriety his deserves for his solo work.

The Primeridian dropped the visuals for the very ill single “Whistle While You Work”. The track is off The Primeridian and Tall Black Guy’s Darling Lure project, which is now available for purchase on iTunes via All Natural Inc. Darling Lure features Naledge, Uncle Imani, ADaD, Pugs Atomz, + more.

Common

This was definitely one of the largest weeks we’ve had in a while in terms of the pure abundance of quality releases, and I know there are some tracks that got overlooked. Next week, will serve better for everyone as we can all soak in the amount of music we got hit with this week, let some of what we’ve heard marinate and catch more music that was lost in this weeks heavy traffic. If you’d like to contribute something to Local Sounds, just hit us up on Twitter, Facebook, or send an email to seanck@rubyhornet.com.
