LooseWorld X Sofia Maldonado Part 2

Here is part 2 of LOOSEWORLD x Sofia Maldonado’s feature (check out part 1 here) as she put the finishing touches on her Mural on 42nd street in Time Square. The mural has been getting a lot of attention outside of the art world when Fox News posted a article about the controversy surrounding the mural. Many people believed the Mural depicts African American & Latina women in a negative light. A protest was even in the works for last week and some people are demanding that the mural taken down. As far as I know, it is still up. Stay tuned as part 3 of this series will definitely be interesting to watch.

Here are my two cents being an art kid myself… I find it difficult to accept censorship. I firmly believe we have the right to create what we want, when we want, as long as no one is being harmed physically (well with out consent). I don’t believe Sofia in any way was trying to degrade brown skinned women.  On the contrary, I believe she aimed to show them off to the rest of the world via her interpretation. Also, that she is not depicting all African/Latina American Women, but specifically those she met during her time spent in Connecticut and other neighborhoods in NY. I guess we will see how this turns out in part 3.
