Mick Luter

“LMFAO! Drops out the light huh?! That’s hilarious,” says Mick Luter in response to all the “where’s Mick talks”.  The emcee who made daily headlines on Chicago Hip Hop sites like this one and our counterpart, fakeshoredrive, hasn’t had a strong presence since the late spring when the city and beyond waited for him to drop his highly anticipated mixtape, Righteous Kill.  But, no mixtape came, and we haven’t seen Mick personally since Do Division Fest, where he performed alongside Mikkey Halsted and Mic Terror.  The summer kind of drifted along, and soon enough, people started asking what happened to the mixtape, as well as the emcee who used the fall and winter months of 2009 to enter a new stage of his career.  The new stage comes with attention from major labels, and the interest of those beyond the Windy City’s borders.  It seemed like an odd time for Mick to grow quiet, so we reached out to the West Side emcee and got the scoop on exactly what he’s been up to since the spring turned to summer.

In this RH exclusive interview, Mick tells us about finishing of Stack Bundles’ album with the late rappers father, the status of Righteous Kill, and more.  Check it out below.

RubyHornet:  First question on everybody’s mind is, where the f**k has Mick Luter been lately?

Mick Luter:  LOL! Mick Luter has been on his business! I plan on releasing a slew of material soon so I have been really preparing for this push. I’ve been working with Stack Bundles’ father on the release of his new album and in that process I’ve met so many helpful people that are receptive to Stack’s music as well as they appreciate the fact that we are so diligent in the process. We got Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, Raheem Devaughn and Jadakiss all involved, so it’s a great look for all parties. This project is something that I am honored to be a part of as well as the opprrtunity to establish some great working relationship with some of the industry’s best and brightest.

RubyHornet:  Anytime an artist drops out of the light for a bit, the whispers start, have you been listening to any of the ‘where’s mick luter’
talk, have you been keeping tabs on things through fsd/rh?

Mick Luter:  LMFAO! Drops out the light huh?! That’s hilarious…All the people that ask that question are people that have my number. I have been performing throughout the city regularly, working on “The Workjob” webisodes, as well as the countless features with others in Chicago weekly.  I can’t front though, I’ve been holding this material to my chest because I’ve met so many people that are genuinely interested in assisting me, so out of those relationships, new music develops. Instead of one mixtape of material, now I have two mixtapes. My main goal is finishing the GUNSMOKE project and we have been working daily on that in itself.

RubyHornet:  Has being in NY been a good break for you?  Do you think this gives you any new perspective when coming back to Chicago?

Mick Luter:  It’s good just to get out the city now and then anyway. I f**ks with NY hard because NY f**s with me. I got a lot of love out there. My perspective is still the same because Chicago doesn’t change. I have found some new outlets to showcase my music on a broader stage.  And you will definitely be the first to get the latest footage.Yadigski!

RubyHornet:  You have a mixtape, Righteous Kill, that was supposed to come out in the spring, what’s the status?  Is that still a go?

Mick Luter:  Definitely still a go. Like I said earlier, the initial plan was to release some records just for free promotion then it grew because so many people wanted to get involved in the project. So it keeps growiing and it still is.  So now I gotta pick this material from the new batch of records. It’s a great problem to have!

RubyHornet:  Let us know any other new developments, what’s the fall shaping up to be?

Mick Luter:  I just finished a record for the Beatknockaz Intl album which also features Royce Da 5’9″, Joe Budden, Pete Rock, Termanology, Nas, and Twista on the compilation, which has been released in Munich, London, And Spain…you can check it out here …still GUNSMOKING of course with SC and Skip Lava, “Over the Pond” project with Budgie from London so it’s constant work. And “Righteous Kill”…So I’ve had my hands full but I can’t complain because I love what I do..
