Kevin Coval: L-Vis Lives

Author and Poet, Kevin Coval, just released his latest book, L-Vis Lives!: Race Music Poems.   The new work is a collection of poetry that details a white rapper’s emergence from the suburbs to superstardom.  The poems examine how white audiences interpret black art, mainly Hip Hop, become attached to it, and then go onto perform.  I am about halfway through the book thus far, and really like how Kevin writes from multiple viewpoints and speaks on the simultaneous genuine and disingenuous nature of his L-Vis character.

Kevin will be performing a new solo show based on the book at Victory Gardens, which debuts tomorrow and will run through April 14th.  On March 29th, I will be participating in a “talk back” with Kevin following the performance.  Please come out and enjoy.  You can see the trailer below as well as all of the dates below.
