I respect the quick come up as much as the next person, and I definitely support the youth trying to make things happen. What I feel needs to be really emphasized is that paying dues is not just bitch work being done for no purpose, or something to keep people down, it is really how to learn your trade and prove yourself. Without ‘paying dues’ you skip necessary steps, and in the end, don’t have a true appreciation of your craft. Paying dues has changed drastically thanks to the internet and our faster paced society, and I’m afraid it comes at a disservice to everyone. A few weeks ago I was at a gig with a young DJ that was just so horrible I really did want to just push him off the turntables. It’s too bad Rude 1 wasn’t there cause he probably woulda done it…
