Musa Reems - Lately I've Been Sole Searching

AEMMP Records, Columbia College Chicago's student run record label, has just released their latest endeavor "Lately I've Been Sol Searching" by their signee Musa Reems. The project is a showcase of Musa's lyrical dexterity, poise on the mic and songwriting ability. He has an old school backpacker type of delivery that makes me think of classic Def Jux. I have long been a fan of Musa, after hearing his Another Dos(e) EP I profiled him for our RH First Look last month here.
Every song has a certain grit and hunger to it with a cohesive vibe thanks to Curbside Jones who produced the entire thing; "How Many" stands out for its soulful production and meaningful socially aware lyrics. "What I Like" is in a similar vein with its old school R&B influences and references to Musa's musical influences in the verses. "What I Like" is a refreshing take on how music is perceived, taking the vantage point of young kids and how they form bonds through mutual interests, including music. [Interview] AEMMP Hip Hop Artist of The Week: thekidDirty
Another week, another new artist to be profiled in our continuing collaboration with Columbia College's AEMMP Records. The student run record label has been scouring campus, looking for students putting in a double-shift as aspiring artists. Today we get to know thekidDirty, an advertising major who found Hip Hop as a teenager after playing in rock bands since he got a drum set at the age of 6. Chicago is ripe right now with multifaceted and disciplined crews. These crews are not just made up of rappers and producers, but also poets, writers, videographers, photographers, fashion kids, plus anything and everything in between. These crews become a home base for creativity, as well as a megaphone for the individual members. One such crew that has been gaining steam since the summer is the PIVOT Gang, fueled in good part by Saba, the talented emcee and producer. It turns out that Saba is also a Columbia College student, and is this week's featured AEMMP Hip Hop Artist of the Week.
