Lupe Fiasco: "Piece of Paper Cup of Jayzus"
It seems as though Lupe is permanently resigned to staying on the sidelines, throwing occasional potshots at the game at large. He's not Papoose by any means, too lyrical and talented for all that, but by allowing others to dictate what he does, Fiasco is quickly making that his lane. On "Piece of Paper of Jayzus," the name itself an obvious toss at Jay-z and Kanye West, who gave him the spotlight in the first place. Fiasco basically goes in for a full seven minutes of telling listeners how he's different, even spending more than a handful of bars simply talking about Earl Sweatshirt and Odd Future. To explain further, allow me to take a page out of Louis C.K.'s book: Of course Lupe is one of the best lyricists of our time, but maybe he needs to stop arguing with women on Twitter and climbing mountains and just make music. This was . . . something. It's understood that hip-hop is a restaurant with many dishes, Lupe just hasn't been serving to my liking lately. When he first came out, it was obvious what set Lupe apart, but now it seems as though he's trying to tell us what that is instead of doing it and PPCJ just reinforces that sentiment. Let me know if you agree, listen below!

Earl Sweatshirt Announces Tour, Talks EarlWolf
Since setting foot back on American soil after a forced year abroad, Earl Sweatshirt has basically done what everyone had been waiting for: make hot rap songs. On the heels of his critically acclaimed Doris, Earl recently announced the dates on his upcoming tour and also talked about EarlWolf, the rumored collaboration album with Tyler, The Creator. "We'll do the record when we're ready to sit down for a month and a half and do it in one [specific time period]," Earl Sweatshirt said during an interview with nme.com. "It'd be shitty if it was spread out. That's how I want to do shit from now on. That's what I learned from doing Doris. Trying to piece shit together that's hella spread out kinda sucks. You hit a lot more walls trying to make it sync." Keep it posted for more on that and look below for when Earl rolls through your town.

[Video] Earl Sweatshirt: "Hive" (feat. Vince Staples and Casey Veggies)
Just the other night, I was talking about how Doris is my most anticipated non-Chicago hip hop album of the year. With confirmation that the years-in-the-making album will be dropping August 20th, the once-mysterious, always-hyped Odd Future rapper will take his place in the spotlight after all of this passed time following the infamous EARL drop from a few years ago.
"Hive" is the latest song/video to come out in support of Doris following "Guild," "Whoa," and "Chum." Featuring Earl staples Vince Staples and Casey Veggies, the song keeps the beat simple to allow Earl's complex wordplay breathe with a dual chorus delivery between Earl and Casey and a closing verse by Vince. The video has some shared motifs with "Chum," like the mysterious plain-faced/masked background creatures littered throughout the video.
Earl's grown and matured considerably since EARL surprised us all three years ago. More importantly, his rhymes are staying multilayered and elaborate enough for this English major to get excited over. Honestly, who hasn't put their backpacks back on in excitement over Doris?

Earl Sweatshirt cancels tour dates due to sickness
Last night, Odd Future rapper Earl Sweatshirt confirmed the cancellation of his summer tour dates due to a mysterious illness that has kept the young rapper out of spirits. This is unfortunate news, as he was going to share the stage with recent collaborator Mac Miller and Chance the Rapper for the former's The Space Migration Tour.
Hopefully, whatever is ailing him isn't anything too severe, as the hype for Doris has been building since EARL was released in 2010. Earl's bad news also carried a bit of good favor as he included a glimpse at his highly-anticipated next project, Doris, which you can see below.Read more

Earl Sweatshirt: "Guild" (feat. Mac Miller)
The bullrush towards Earl Sweatshirt's highly-anticipated Doris continues with this new song, "Guild." With Mac Miller featured on the song, "Guild" features the two rappers delivering their verses in a lower octave to create a dark tone for the song. Earl continues to display his lyrical growth with every Doris song release. We all had early hyper for him when EARL came out, but it seems like he might be able to meet the lofty expectations he garnered with his debut EP.
It's been a good week for Mac Miller on Ruby Hornet as he produced the hot "In a Minute" by Sir Michael Rocks with Ab-Soul and Dash. Earl Sweatshirt, meanwhile, begins his trifecta of Jambalaya dates tonight in Houston. Check out "Guild" below, which was premiered by Fader. A solid release date hasn't been announced for Doris, but I know it'll be the only thing I listen to for the weeks following its release.
