[Video] M.I.A: "Y.A.L.A."

M.I.A. released a video for her song, "Y.A.L.A" off her latest album, Matangi late yesterday. The period-heavy title gives way to a glow in the dark romp for the Sri Lankan artist that has had a big year to this point. The scattering colors and flashing lights, part of KENZO's production, set the perfect backing for the over-sized beats that come as a pre-requisite with any M.I.A. piece. Check it out below.

M.I.A: "Y.A.L.A."

In what be the most periods ever in a title, M.I.A put her own twist on the "YOLO" saying, distorting it into her own renditionof the Drake tune and tweeting "If you only live once why we keep doing the same shit?" It's a taste of her upcoming album, Matangi, due out November 5 through Interscope. For now, listen below.

M.I.A. speaks on NFL's $1.5 Million Fine

When she flipped off everyone watching the Super Bowl half time show last year M.I.A. probably didn't think the NFL would fine her $1.5 million. I'm sure everyone has seen the footage and if you haven't you can check it out here. Now I'm sure she just got in the heat of the moment and for whatever reason she did what shes did. Though you'd have to figure the NFL wouldn't be happy about the situation and would fine her in some way. But who would of thought it would be that much money, if I was her I wouldn't want to pay it either. Rocking an Oakland Raiders crew neck she flips the bird to the NFL all over again challenging them as to what's worse her flipping the bird or them sexually exploiting Madonnas  back up dancers. As she states, "basically, so they can say it’s OK for me to promote being sexually exploited as a female than to display female empowerment through being punk rock. That is what it boils down to, and I’m being sued for it."

M.I.A.: "UNBREAK my Mixtape"

It seems like all of the controversy surrounding the release of M.I.A.'s next album, Matangi, is beginning to fade away as the marketing push for the album has finally begun. Following her drop of both "Bring the Noize" and the controversial behind-the-scenes documentary, M.I.A. has released a new track from the aforementioned Matangi, "UNBREAK my Mixtape." The song has a trippy, repetition-heavy beat paired with M.I.A.'s airy vocal delivery with lyrics about a breakup. The song includes samples from "Tender" by Blur and "I Love You More Than Words Can Say" by Karen Dalton.

Check it out below.

[Video] M.I.A. Documentary Teaser

Not all is well in the world of M.I.A. With her album Matangi constantly getting pushed back due to some behind-the-scenes problems with M.I.A.'s label, it seemed like Matangi would never see the light of day. The female rapper thus took it upon herself to drop the video for one of the album's tracks, "Bring the Noize," as a show of good faith for her fans. A planned documentary to coincide with the release, directed by long-time M.I.A. friend, Steve Loveridge, also had its production halted.

Annoyed by the major label execs' politics, Loveridge himself leaked a teaser to the M.I.A. documentary he had been compiling footage of over the years. Featuring archival interviews with Kanye West, Diplo, Spike Jonze, and more, the documentary looked not only at M.I.A.'s popularity,  but also her family life surrounding her father's noted ties with the Tamil Tiger Guerillas sect in Sri Lanka.

Unfortunately, the odds of the documentary being released are relatively slim. Loveridge shared a private email exchange between himself and a Roc Nation representative over the weekend in which he simply brushes the rep away. The documentary still has support from M.I.A., so it's possible that it could find life in the future, although it would have to jump hurdles to escape the legal ramifications and ties with Roc Nation. M.I.A. hinted at a possible Kickstarter to help fund the production costs:

Even if you're not a fan of M.I.A., the ties between herself and her father are interesting enough themselves. I'll be keeping an eye out for this documentary; hopefully some kind of agreement can be met so it can still follow the release of Matangi, which is scheduled for a fall release... for now.
