Spike Lee headshot

Spike Lee's Use of Chiraq for His Next Film is Infuriating

My faith in Spike Lee's abilities as a compelling storyteller has been dwindling for a few years now, and it was all but severed after watching his latest film, Da Sweet Blood of Jesus. During my video interview with the director, I asked him why he decided to crowdfund the film, to which he replied, "To get the money." It looks like Lee is going for the money yet again with the title choice for his next film, the offensively-titled Chiraq.

As reported by The Wrap earlier, Lee and Amazon Studios are working together to shoot a film in Chicago with a rumored ensemble cast featuring Kanye West, Samuel L. Jackson, Jeremy Piven, and Common. While there are little to no details beyond these rumors, the film's moniker alone should be enough to piss off dedicated Chicagoans, myself included.

The term "Chiraq" has been plaguing the city's residents for a couple of years now as it compares the city's recent history of gun violence and murder to the war torn country in the Middle East. Some residents (and non-residents, as is wont to happen to those desperately trying to identify with the city) have embraced and glorified the term, while others recognize the nickname's inherent hate and negativity. And for the most part, the term has dissipated with only a select few still embracing the term in an attempt to further push the image of Chicago being a dangerous city. That's not to ignore or brush aside the countless acts of violence we unfortunately hear on a daily basis, but the fact remains that the title bestowed upon this amazing city does nothing to further advance how multi-dimensional and outstanding Chicago is, relegating it to nothing more than a city we ought to be in fear of.

[youtube id="TybFtK6VTVo"]

I acknowledge that, with no plot information for Chiraq, my reactions to the film may be too premature. However, with Lee's recent feature films, he's demonstrated his inability to truly capture the level of quality he showed early in his career. Perhaps his choice of using the term will be used in a way to subvert what it stands for, but I worry Lee won't be able to do the film or this city justice. At the very least, he's done his due diligence, as the Chicago Tribune noted Lee was in town earlier this year to research the city's recent history of violence with St. Sabina's Reverend Michael Pfleger. And for that, I commend him.

However, the use of the term is misguided, demeaning, and insulting to Chicago. We are more than just "Chiraq," but by having an icon such as Lee embracing the nickname for his film will do nothing to alleviate the city's public perception from those across the country. Last year, VICE released a series of video documentaries that seemed to push an agenda of exploiting the Chiraq phenomenon, and it's with this in mind that I worry even more about Lee's Chiraq.

Spike, if you're going to shoot a film dealing with and discussing the city's violence, I implore you to come up with a better title. Use a title that isn't so closely associated with murder, with violence, with gang culture, with ignorant rappers, with hate. I love my city, and I would never refer to it with such an ugly term that exploits every single Chicagoan that has been affected by the city's outbursts of violence. And if you do decide to keep the title, prove me wrong - show me and the world that you still have something left in the tank to bring change to a problem that's plagued us for years.

Rest in peace, Mikal.

David Lynch

David Lynch Walks Out on Twin Peaks Revival

When the third season of Twin Peaks was announced last October, the internet exploded with excitement. I've never been a fan of series creator David Lynch, but I admire his approach to his surrealist storytelling. With the TV medium as a whole ushering in a heightened level of quality in terms of both storytelling and cinematography, having a show like Twin Peaks (which itself helped revolutionize serial storytelling in the early 90s) return would further establish the current golden era of TV.

With that said, Lynch pulled a patented Lynch-esque twist over the weekend by publicly quitting on the project mid-production. Through a series of tweets, the enigmatic writer explained the reasons behind his departure:

Dear Twitter Friends, Showtime did not pull the plug on Twin Peaks. After 1 year and 4 months of negotiations, I left because not enough money was offered to do the script the way I felt it needed to be done. This weekend I started to call actors to let them know I would not be directing. Twin Peaks may still be very much alive at Showtime. I love the world of Twin Peaks and wish things could have worked out differently.

The original plan for the third season involved Lynch and series co-writer/creator Mark Frost writing the scripts with Lynch at the helm directing the full nine-episode season. However, with his departure, the show's future is up in the air. As Lynch mentioned in his tweets, the show still could carry on with Frost and the cast on board, but losing such a large entity as Lynch would dampen expectations and excitement for the show.

Furthermore, it's unfortunate that the dissolving of the relationship is due to money. Granted, it's understandable that Lynch would want a certain budget allotted to accomplish his vision in full, but budgetary restrictions are nothing new, especially in Hollywood. Then again, with some like Lynch, anything less than full commitment would probably garner a weaker product. We'll see how this story develops over the coming weeks.

Mad Men Season 7 Promo

[Weekly Netflix Fix] Final March Update

The final Netflix Instant update of March is here, and while it doesn't feature many quality updates, a few additions make up for the otherwise lackluster update. Just in time for the final season of Mad Men (which is actually the second half of Season 7) comes the first half of the season set in the first half of 1969. As an avid Mad Men fan, I tore through the seven episodes in a day and can't wait for the final seven. Also included in this update is Life Itself, the brilliant documentary about one of my idols, Roger Ebert.

Fox Reopens The X-Files For Six Episode Miniseries

Fox has confirmed reports that landmark '90s horror series The X-Files will indeed be returning to TV for a six-episode miniseries that will enter production later this year. No word on a premiere date, but series creator Chris Carter will be back on writing duties, while original stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson will also be returning.

Anyone who enjoyed the show during its heyday will find it difficult not to be at least a tiny bit excited about this, even if the shambolic 2008 movie sequel poisoned the well a little. The original run of The X-Files coincided perfectly with the advent of the internet and its insanely convoluted mythology and will-they-won't-they relationship between the two leads made perfect fodder for early fansites and chatrooms in the days of shrieking modems and parents shouting angrily from downstairs about not being able to use the landline.

Unlike the thematically timeless Twin Peaks, another classic series set for return if David Lynch can sort out a contractual disagreement with Showtime, The X-Files' focus on alien invasions and government conspiracies were very much a product of their pre-millennial time. These days, most people couldn't care less about UFOs, and while government secrets are very much at the forefront of many people's minds, the kind of evils being unearthed feel rather too nasty and real to make the notion of paranormal conspiracies feel anything other than a bit frivolous.

It's a fair assumption the show will focus telling a single story across its six hours, which could be a good or bad thing depending on what you enjoyed about the original, whose monster-of-the-week episodes produced some genuine masterpieces of televisual horror. It'll certainly be great to have Duchovny and Anderson back, while I'd also wager Mitch Pileggi is nailed-on to return as the agents' grouchy but loveable boss, Walter Skinner. Personally, I'd like to see Robert Patrick's John Doggett and Annabeth Gish's Monica Reyes appearing in some capacity as well, though accept I'm probably the only one.

It'll be interesting to see whether The X-Files or Twin Peaks is more successful at recapturing the old magic, though my money is very much on Lynch rather than Carter. Carter was never a particularly nuanced writer at the best of times and many of the series' finest episodes came from others, like Darin and Glenn Morgan or Vince Gilligan, who's probably too busy with Better Call Saul to make a glorious return. Still, at least this means the series will get a third chance at a decent ending, following the disastrous clip show recap that was the original two-part finale, 'The Truth', or the aforementioned 2008 movie.

Trust no-one, but fingers crossed regardless.

HBO Go and PS4

Comcast Blocks HBO Go for PS4 Users

HBO Go finally debuted on Playstation 4s this week. However, PlayStation gamers who are currently subscribed to Comcast are unable to rejoice just yet as it's been revealed that the internet service provider has blocked HBO Go from running on the systems. PlayStation 3 owners have been experiencing the same blockage since last year when the app was released on the system.

It's important to note, however, that other ISPs like AT&T, Verizon, and Time Warner Cable won't block the app from running properly, and gamers on the other side of the fence (e.g. Xbox 360 and Xbox One) are free to enjoy the service without limitations. So why is Comcast blocking the service, which is said to be the best way to experience HBO Go, for the best-selling next-gen gaming system right now?

In a response sent to IGN, Comcast clarified the situation:

"Xfinity customers who subscribe to HBO currently have access to the full HBO library via their set to box, or via Xfinity TV Go platforms across devices. We also currently authenticate more than 90 networks across 18 devices (and we began authenticating HBO and Showtime on Roku last December) so there is no shortage in the number of ways for our customers to access their content across the devices and platforms of their choice."

In short, Comcast further alienates their customer base with their dealings. This isn't to say Comcast subscribers won't forever be unable to experience HBO Go on their PlayStations - it just might take a ridiculously long time for authentication to take place. One thing's clear: Logan Square desperately needs high-speed AT&T service so I can get out of my current Comcast contract.
