[Trailer 2] The Expendables 3

The latest trailer for the action-filled The Expendables 3 is upon us, and begins with a funny little note. As a tongue-in-cheek reference to Wesley Snipes' return to the big screen following his three-year incarceration, the trailer starts off with The Expendables team saving Snipes' character Doc from captivity with Sylvester Stallone's Barney quipping, "Great to have you back," followed by Doc responding with, "No better place to be." It's this self-referential meta-humor that I wanted more of from the past two Expendables films, but alas better late than never. Billed as the final ride for the crew of action stars, The Expendables 3 is looking to go out with a bang.

The Expendables 3 finds the crew facing off against Barney's old partner and co-founder of The Expendables, Conrad Stonebanks (Mel Gibson), as he plots to take vengeance on Barney for leaving him for dead years ago. In order to go toe to toe with Stonebanks, Barney must utilize both his established team of Expendables with some new blood specializing in computer tech. Outside of the narrative, this allows the franchise to not only incorporate action stars of yesteryear (Gibson, Stallone, Snipes, Jason Statham, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Harrison Ford, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Terry Crews, Randy Couture, Antonio Banderas, and Kelsey Grammer) with action stars of the present/future (Kellan Lutz, Ronda Rousey, Glen Powell, and Victor Ortiz).

The Expendables 3 will be hitting theaters on August 15th.

The stage is set for the purported "final" film in the The Expendables trilogy. What started as an ode to classic, throwback '80s action films is now becoming a hybrid of the one liner-filled cheesy action films of yesteryear with the smart, technological action films of today in The Expendables 3. With new actors joining the film (Kellen Lutz, Ronda Roussey, Victor Ortiz, Glen Powell) alongside The Expendables staples (Sylvester Stallone, Terry Crews, Jet Li, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Randy Couture) and other action film icons (Harrison Ford, Kelsey Grammer, Wesley Snipes, Antonio Banderas, Mel Gibson), The Expendables 3 is certainly setting itself up to be include a who's who in the genre. This first trailer for the film serves as a roll call of every major player set to share screen time.

You can read the full film synopsis below, and expect to have your theater made expendable when The Expendables 3 hits theaters on August 15th.

In THE EXPENDABLES 3, Barney (Stallone), Christmas (Statham) and the rest of the team comes face-to-face with Conrad Stonebanks (Gibson), who years ago co-founded The Expendables with Barney. Stonebanks subsequently became a ruthless arms trader and someone who Barney was forced to kill… or so he thought. Stonebanks, who eluded death once before, now is making it his mission to end The Expendables — but Barney has other plans. Barney decides that he has to fight old blood with new blood, and brings in a new era of Expendables team members, recruiting individuals who are younger, faster and more tech-savvy. The latest mission becomes a clash of classic old-school style versus high-tech expertise in the Expendables’ most personal battle yet.

The very first teaser trailer for The Expendables 3 was just released recently. While it doesn't give any hints towards the sequel's story or anything, it does highlight all of the big names attached to the film. While I've mentioned some of them in the past, nothing beats seeing everybody on the screen together. Joining previous Expendables such as Sylvester Stallone, Dolph Lundgren, Jason Statham, Arnold Schwarzenegger, et al, are Wesley Snipes, Mel Gibson, Harrison Ford, Kellen Lutz (really), amongst others.

/Film has a full synopsis of the sequel that you can read below:

Harrison Ford to replace Bruce Willis in The Expendables 3

Sylvester Stallone's love letter to forgotten testosterone-driven action films, The Expendables, has found a good audience. While they feature too much plot and not enough one-liners, the Expendables films have at least been entertaining, if only for the fact that they combine some of the greatest action stars of the past 30 years. Today, news came out that another action icon will be joining the fraternity via Stallone's personal Twitter:

It appears that Mr. Indiana Jones himself will become expendable, joining franchise newcomers Nicolas Cage, Jackie Chan, Milla Jovovich, and Wesley Snipes. However, the news is a bit bittersweet as Bruce Willis will not be returning. I'm a fan of Ford, but he doesn't carry the same machismo that Willis does. As the stable continues to grow, I'm sure more names will be announced. Are there any other actors you feel could fit the franchise?

The Expendables 3

Nicolas Cage, Jackie Chan, Milla Jovovich, and Wesley Snipes Become Not So Expendable for The Expendables 3

How do you build on a film franchise that has already featured such illustrious action stars as Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Bruce Willis, Dolph Lundgren, Mickey Rourke, Chuck Norris, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Terry Crews, and Arnold Schwarzenegger? Obviously by adding even more stars. Collider is reporting that Jackie Chan, Nicolas Cage, Wesley Snipes, and Milla Jovovich are in discussions to join The Expendables 3, this time being directed by Patrick Hughes.

It'll be great to see Chan return to his martial arts roots, especially if Jet Li returns. With Snipes making his return to acting following his prison sentence, it'll be interesting to see how Stallone writes his character. Cage, I'm not the biggest fan of, but I'm sure he'll be used mostly for weird non-sequitors and one-liners. Jovovich, of course, showed how much of a badass she can be in the Resident Evil franchise, so it's good to see Stallone being aware of the franchise's need for more of a female presence.

The Expendables 3 is still in the early stages of production, but keep your eyes open for it. Hopefully, it'll become the action film it should be, given the stars attached, and not the shell of an action epic that the previous two films have been.
