Miles Teller and J.K. Simmons in Whiplash

Geoff's Top 10 Trailers of 2014

Miles Teller and J.K. Simmons in Whiplash

2014 was one of my favorite years of moviegoing, played in no small part by attending my first Sundance. While I watched less films this year overall than I have in my four years of officially being part of the film community, I still watched more than my fair share of trailers. I know people that live for trailers; I also know people who refuse to watch them. Both groups have very valid reasons, with the former embracing the snippets of story and style to help determine their film choices amidst the world of ever-increasing ticket prices, and the latter wanting to enter the film experience full of surprise and intrigue. Listed over the next few pages are some of my personal favorite trailers of 2014. I hope you enjoy watching them as much as I did.

Slowly but surely, the curtains are being peeled back to reveal Brad Bird (The Incredibles) and Damon Lindelof's (LOST) upcoming film, Tomorrowland. Inspired by the Disney theme park area, Tomorrowland is a trip through the past when films focused on the mystery and intrigue of the unknown, of the promise of a future that hasn't become jaded. During a panel at New York Comic Con last week, Bird was on hand to reveal the first official teaser trailer for the film.

Britt Robertson (Dan in Real Life) stars as Casey, a young, adventurous woman, and George Clooney as Frank, a failed inventor during his youth. Together, they discover a place known as Tomorrowland that exists outside of their reality where time and space isn't governed by the same rules. Despite this, their actions in Tomorrowland affect the real world.

Tomorrowland will be in theaters on May 22nd, 2015. You can read the film's official synopsis below.

From Disney comes two-time Oscar® winner Brad Bird’s riveting, mystery adventure “Tomorrowland,” starring Academy Award® winner George Clooney. Bound by a shared destiny, former boy-genius Frank (Clooney), jaded by disillusionment, and Casey (Britt Robertson), a bright, optimistic teen bursting with scientific curiosity, embark on a danger-filled mission to unearth the secrets of an enigmatic place somewhere in time and space known only as “Tomorrowland.” What they must do there changes the world—and them—forever.

First details of Brad Bird's Tomorrowland revealed

Bound by a shared destiny, a bright, optimistic teen bursting with scientific curiosity and a former boy-genius inventor jaded by disillusionment embark on a danger-filled mission to unearth the secrets of an enigmatic place somewhere in time and space that exists in their collective memory as Tomorrowland.

This is the official synopsis for the mysterious Disney film, Tomorrowland. Up until this morning, the film has been shrouded in enigmatic clouds, with nothing outside of cast and crew announced and a mysterious reference to a long-forgotten box labeled "1952" found in underground passageways at Walt Disney Studio. The contents of the "1952" box revealed old photos of Walt Disney, various blueprints, maps, and concept art for Disney World attractions, comics, and other memorabilia. However, what helped inspire Bird and Lindelof was the common theme amongst the items that focused on future technology, space, and overall imagination.

Director Brad Bird (The IncrediblesMission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol) is co-writing the film with Damon Lindelof (LostPrometheus). Starring are George Clooney as the "former boy-genius inventor" and Britt Robertson (Under the Dome) as the "bright, optimistic teen"; the cast also includes Hugh Laurie (House), Raffey Cassidy (Snow White and the Huntsman), and Thomas Robinson (Heroes).

Tomorrowland just recently went into production and is targeting a December 12, 2014 release date.
