[Video] Gramatik Announces 2014 Winter Tour

Gramatik is one of the funkiest EDM producers in the game right now, and yesterday announced plans to head back out on the road in 2014. The Slovenian-born DJ made the announcement alongside a video from his recent sold-out show in Athens, Greece as part of his 2013 Age of Reason Tour. Gramatik will be in Chicago around New Year's Eve for a pair of dates at Concord Music Hall and The Auditorium Theatre on the 30 & 31 respectively before taking off to Canada to begin his tour in Drake's hometown of Toronto on January 16. Established one of the more gifted producers in EDM, Gramatik's compositions can get fans worked into a frenzy or set the mood for a perfect wavy, chill afternoon. Ringing in the new year with his music wouldn't be such a bad way to start 2014.  Tickets went on sale for the general public earlier today, so make sure to pick yours up here, for the New Year's Eve shows put on by REACT Presents, kick it here. Scroll your way down for the Greece video, his latest track, "Obviously" with Cherub and ExMag and a full list of tour dates.

Elephant Revival Announces Tour

Elephant Revival has been one of the more pleasant surprises to come across my musical consciousness this year. Their album, These Changing Skies, released September 3, is a refreshingly coy and to the point project hat manages to veer off in directions of experimenting with sound and aesthetic at the same time. The band has seen a nice rise in reputation as the year has worn on and their album has found itself solid reviews from a variety of outlets, including Paste Magazine, NPR and more. The Colorado-based five piece folk band is proving that DJs can't overtake live instrumentation after all, and will continue to push their brand of bluesy-folk with a slew of new tour dates, announced late last week. Catch the group between February and March, moving about throughout the West Coast, beginning in Colorado and ending in California. Full dates below:
Elephant Revival Winter Tour dates
Feb. 20 – Aggie Theatre, Fort Collins, Colo.
Feb. 21 – Aggie Theatre, Fort Collins, Colo.
Feb. 23 – WinterWonderGrass Craft Brew & Bluegrass Festival, Avon, Colo.
Feb. 28 – Wintergrass Festival, Bellevue, Wash.
March 1 – Wintergrass Festival, Bellevue, Wash.
March 4 – WOW Hall, Eugene, Ore.
March 5 – Applegate River Lodge, Applegate, Ore.

March 7 – Mystic Theatre, Petaluma, Calif.

[Video] Nine Inch Nails Announce Tour

Believe it or not, Nine Inch Nails is heading back out on tour, and they have a video to prove it. Frontman of the iconic rock band, Trent Reznor, announced plans for a 2014 tour and a new band lineup consisting of Ilan Rubin, Alessandro Cortini, and Robin Finck. The video is a 77-minute concert film documenting the band's "Tension 2013" tour and yesterday, Reznor also participated in a Reddit AMA with users. No word yet on dates or stops on the tour, but there should plenty of footage in the documentary piece to keep even the most ardent of fans appeased for at least a little while.

For its part, the documentary video follows Nine Inch Nails' concert November 8 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles as part of their arena tour earlier this year. The fourteen song setlist can be found below, along with the video.

Paper Diamond Announces Tour with Trap Mix

Paper Diamond has big plans for the new year. Today, the Colorado-based DJ announced a 32-stop tour alongside the release of his 22 minute Trap mix, intended to get the party started before the tour even begins. A mainstay in the EDM world for a minute now, Paper Diamond entered the larger lexicon of listener's consciousness last year with the release of his EP, Paragon and continues to gain steam after a successful summer that saw him on several festival stages across the country including North Coast, Bonaroo and TomorrowWorld, as well as opening for Zeds Dead. PD will close out a successful 2013 campaign opening for Big Gigantic as they take their annual Chicago New Year's Eve show east to New York City. Always a party, and never repetitive, Paper Diamond puts on one hell of a party, check out the tour dates and accompanying mix here below for a slight preview.

[Album] Melt-Banana: "fetch" + 2 do what 2 fetch North American Tour dates

It's been six years since Melt-Banana's last studio album, Bambi's Dilemma, and a lot has changed for the band in the interim. 2011's Tohoku earthquake stalled fetch's release, then the band's long-standing bassist, the diminutive Rika mm, left the band in 2012. Deciding to continue on as a duo (the band hasn't had a permanent drummer for some time now), guitarist Agata and human machine gun vocalist Yako have pressed forward. Thankfully, too, because fetch is the band's best album since 2003's Cell-Scape.

Bambi's Dilemma was a huge departure from Melt-Banana's noise-core, grimy punk sound; simply put, it sounded too over-produced and poppy. The second half of that album played up to what the band has become known for in their 20+ year history: quick-hitting, messy guitar-addled 30 second quips. With fetch, there are no games played, no punches pulled, and no ear drums left intact. Many words can be used to describe Melt-Banana's sound, but the phrase that fits them best is discordant dissonance.

Melt-Banana

Take, for example, fetch's intro, "Candy Gun." The album lulls listeners into a false sense of security as the sound of waves lapping are paired with what sounds like a CD skipping as a chiming beats lightly between the ears. The ghost of Rika's heavy bass tones soon come in as Agata's guitar to seemingly dance and skip over the bass lines before the drum machine kicks in, further setting the rhythm of the song. Almost two minutes pass before Agata's frenetic guitar playing rears its head, colliding head-first with Yako's high-pitched yelp (yes, all of Melt-Banana's songs are in English). Suddenly, the third act begins with guitar, bass, and drums exploding into one another while Agata's guitar scratching pairs with laser-like effects that shoot left, Yako's staccato spreading right, and the destruction of the rhythm section simply crashing down beneath the two.

fetch features a Melt-Banana that has eased off of the gas pedal a little bit. This is, after all, a band that recorded a raw, purposely lo-fi debut album (Speak Squeak Creak) in famed Chicago producer/audio engineer Steve Albini's basement back in 1993, but also began exploring a higher fidelity in sound and song structure 10 years later in Cell-Scapefetch, then, is the combination of their early days' aggressive, grind-core sound with their recent increased focus in melody - discordant dissonance at its finest.

You can stream fetch exclusively on Spin; you can also purchase the album on iTunes.

Melt-Banana will be embarking on their first North American tour since 2011 in support of fetch on the aptly titled "2 do what 2 fetch" North American Tour beginning on October 16th in Vancouver and running from coast to coast until November 16th in Oakland. I'm curious to see how their live performance has changed with the absence of Rika bouncing along on a bass that's 3/4 her size, but considering Melt-Banana's insane fan base, the set shouldn't suffer too much, if at all. Full tour dates and tour poster can be found below. I'll hopefully see some of you guys at their Chicago date on October 27.

Jay Z announces North American Magna Carter World Tour dates

Talk about oneupmanship. The dust hadn’t even settled following Kanye West’s announcement of his Yeezus Tour when Jay Z decided to announce the North American tour dates for his Magna Carter World Tour. The rivalry/friendship between the Watch the Throne members is such an interesting dynamic to watch, especially when it results in music for fans. Still, Jay could have given Kanye this one and not stolen his thunder so early in the morning. As if the timing of his announcement wasn’t bad enough, tickets for the tour are going on sale on September 12, one day before Kanye’s Yeezus Tour tickets are available.
