[Weekend Box Office] Transformers: Age of Extinction's $100m Opening

Love it or hate it, Michael Bay's Transformers franchise is a perennial moneymaker, as illustrated this past weekend when the latest entry, Transformers: Age of Extinction, made $100m in its opening weekend. The large financial showing comes in spite of the film's poor reviews, with its Rotten Tomatoes average score at a mere 17%. However, the film and its subsequent sequels will continue to make millions of dollars in spite of any negative reviews, so Transformers fans can expect to see more of the same for years to come!

1. Transformers: Age of Extinction - $100,000,000

Think Like a Man Too

[Weekend Box Office] Think Like a Man Too Topped the Box Office... Really

Way to go, people. You let Think Like a Man Too top the box office this past weekend. Really, I have nothing against director Tim Story (BarbershopFantastic Four) or even comedian Kevin Hart, but I hate the notion that this film's success will line Steve Harvey's sexist pockets with money. Shame on you, people. You should know better. At least Think Like a Man Too's $30m isn't all that much. This weekend's second place film, 22 Jump Street, made $29m to bring its domestic total past the $100m mark. How to Train Your Dragon 2 rounded out the Top 3 with a $25.3m take. This weekend's other wide release, Jersey Boys, opened in 4th place with a respectable $13.5m.

Film still of 22 Jump Street

[Weekend Box Office] 22 Jump Street Jumps to Top of Box Office

Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill have stuck lightning twice as their latest buddy film, 22 Jump Street, opened to an estimated $60m this weekend to take the top spot on the box office. However, the second place film, How to Train Your Dragon 2, opened to a just as strong $50m debut. The Weekend of Sequels, as I'm referring to it right now, runs more in line with X-Men: Days of Future Past's sequel success (which itself made $9.5m for 6th place) while the summer's other big sequel, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, recently made $700m worldwide, but performed poorly domestically. Last week's top film, The Fault in Our Stars, made $15.7m, but dropped to 5th place. Angelina Jolie's Maleficent edged out Tom Cruise's Edge of Tomorrow, $19m to $16m.

You can read the rest of this weekend's box office below.

1. 22 Jump Street - $60,000,000

2. How to Train Your Dragon 2 - $50,000,000

3. Maleficent - $19,008,000

4. Edge of Tomorrow - $16,175,000

5. The Fault in Our Stars - $15,725,000

6. X-Men: Days of Future Past - $9,500,000

7. Godzilla - $3,155,000

9. Neighbors - $2,483,760

10. Chef - $2,275,500

Film still of Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort in The Fault in Our Stars

[Weekend Box Office] The Fault in Our Stars Upsets Edge of Tomorrow

If you were to ask me last week whether I thought the Shailene Woodley-led drama The Fault in Our Stars would outperform the Tom Cruise-starring sci-fi/action film Edge of Tomorrow, I'd have scoffed in your face and said "No chance." Yet, here we are Monday morning and that's exactly what happened. The Fault in Our Stars opened to $48m while Edge of Tomorrow only garnered $29m. Could it be a sign of Woodley's rising star, Cruise's fading star, audiences' fatigue over summer sci-fi/action blockbusters, or something else entirely?

Whatever it may be, this doesn't bode well for Cruise. This is the third film in a row for the actor that has severely underperformed at domestic box offices. 2012's Jack Reacher only made $80m in North America and 2013's Oblivion made $89m. Luckily, his name still carries some weight overseas as the aforementioned films found financial success in international box offices. Still, it's a sign that Cruise might be in the twilight of his career.

You can read this weekend's full box office numbers below.

1. The Fault in Our Stars - $48,200,000

2. Maleficent - $33,523,000

3. Edge of Tomorrow - $29,105,000

4. X-Men: Days of Future Past - $14,700,000

Angelina Jolie in Maleficent

[Weekend Box Office] Angelina Jolie's Maleficent Opens to Huge Numbers

Angelina Jolie made some power moves this weekend with her latest film, Disney's Maleficent, as it had a spectacular $70m opening to net the top spot at the box office. The film, which is a live-action retelling of Sleeping Beauty from the antagonist's perspective, made more than twice the amount this week's runner-up made, last week's top film, X-Men: Days of Future Past. The other major release this weekend, Seth MacFarlane's A Million Ways to Die in the West, underperformed with a $17m return. Godzilla made $12m this weekend, allowing the film to hold tight to its Top 5 positioning. Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore's Blended rounded out the Top 5 with $8m. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 continues its fall from grace with a $3.7m showing for 7th. Jon Favreau's Chef continues to surprise, bringing in an additional $2m, edging it closer to the $7m mark. While those numbers might sound considerably low, the film has only been released in 624 theaters, making an average of $3,219 in each theater this weekend.

You can check out the rest of this weekend's box office numbers below.

1. Maleficent - $70,000,000

2. X-Men: Days of Future Past - $32,600,000

Still of Hugh Jackman and James McAvoy in X-Men: Days of Future Past

[Weekend Box Office] X-Men: Days of Future Past Travels to the Top

Memorial Day weekend is usually a big boon for Hollywood as it represents the first real push towards the huge summer blockbusters that'll invade our minds and eyeballs over the next couple of months. Fox's X-Men: Days of Future Past came out swinging, bringing a solid $90m debut this weekend. The mutants' return to the big screen poses as a bad sign for Sony's The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which fell to fifth place with $7.8m. X-Men's $90m is already half of what ASM 2 has made domestically, and financiers have been calling the film a financial underachiever. Last week's top film, Godzilla, fell to 2nd with $31.4m, bringing its domestic total to $148m. Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore's Blended opened to a respectable $14m for 3rd place, while the Seth Rogen-led Neighbors rounded out the Top 5 with $13.9m for a $113m domestic total. Jon Favreau's Chef expanded across more theaters, doubling its domestic totals this weekend alone. Heaven is For Real just barely held on to 10th, knocking Captain America: The Winter Soldier out of the Top 10 by $200K.

You can check out the entire weekend box office totals below.

1. X-Men: Days of Future Past - $90,700,000

2. Godzilla - $31,425,000
