To celebrate “Dilla Month”: the life of the legendary James Yancey aka Jay Dee aka J Dilla, Stones Throw has collaborated with select artists to create tribute tees to the person who brought him into the world, his mother Maureen Yancey aka Ma Dukes. If you are familiar with the “complexity” of The Dilla Estate especially related to Ma Dukes, you will further understand why this is for her. Ma Dukes suffers from Lupus, the same disease that took her son’s life and she is having a hard time dealing with medical bills, medicine, and rent. All proceeds will be donated directly to Ma Dukes and all artists have contributed designs for free to further help the cause. The first up is Parra.
If you would like to read up on Ma Dukes (and others) situation vs The Dilla Estate, peep the link:
The folks from Jeepney, Once Upon A Time & Grey One Social have teamed up to make a tee that will make collaboration history. Scheduled to launch this month exclusively to the Philippines, Jeepney, with it’s Filipino roots joined with Once Upon A Time for their iconic “We Run” series, and Grey One Social to be only sold in their ground breaking boutiques in Manila.
FRESH DRESSED: THE BOWTIE
Since the days of Alfalfa and Buckwheat (Little Rascals for the youngsters), the bowtie has been a staple in fashion. When worn, it’s awkward look always draws attention. It can be a compliment to any dressy casual to formal situation and is an instant conversation starter (fellas take notes). Recently it has been reappearing on the runways and is making its presence known once again for the party people.
Here’s a little tutorial for those amateur bowtie rockers…
Bootlegging is everywhere. Screener copies of new movie releases, music leaks, fake Coach purses and Polo gear clones are not hard to find if you know where to look. Why do I care? I didn’t until I was the victim of the crime first hand.
A potential client hit me up wanting to see a pricelist for shoe customs. She then told me that she had seen my designs on a reputable online auction site and wanted to see if it would be cheaper to go straight to the source.
I asked for the link to see how the auction was going and what do I see? BDAMN! Somebody in China took my design and made size runs! I was a little flattered, but WTF!? I contacted the seller and asked her kindly(kinda) to take them off the site or I would report her. She removed them, but I know they will be in circulation somewhere else. Lesson learned for sure.
FRESH FROM THE LAB
BIG MONEY Custom AF1s: These shoes were commissioned by a big fan of artist/toy designer MAD L. The base shoe that was provided was an all black pair of Air Force Ones. The “Big Money” theme was requested, so gold accents were applied in addition to the pieces of the MAD L character collection as well as his tag ghosted throughout the design.
