The Re-Up

We got lots to talk about, so without any fluff here is the Friday Saturday afternoon cause Dimes and Dozens was too crazy Re-Up straight up.  This week at RH has been crazy busy. With everybody hard at work, we’ve been able to crank out some of the hottest reviews, art/style updates, new tracks, and some wild interviews to share with you all.

dead prez

Continuing our research on the front-to-back ability tests, we picked dead prez and Green Lantern’s project Turn Off The Radio Vol. 3: Pulse Of The People as this week’s specimen. Receiving a “Breathe & Stop” rating, our LP experts here at RH concluded that it was overall a solid album but did require 3 to 5 skips. Read more of the review here and be sure to pick up a copy of Pulse Of The People so you can judge for yourself.

Taking a short break from rap music and the hustle and bustle of the big city, I drove down to good state of Indiana last week to catch one of my all time favorite bands in action, No Doubt. This long awaited reunion tour was something I had been waiting for since 3rd grade, when I purchased my very first No Doubt CD Tragic Kingdom. After 11 years of waiting, 200 miles of driving, and a $52 ticket, I went to my very first No Doubt concert. Check out the whole article here.

Zevs arrest

Along with new music reviews, we recently received news about French street artist Zevs latest collection being showcased at Art Statements Gallery in Hong Kong. Creating a series of dripping Louis Vuitton and Chanel logo paintings, Zevs sensational designs mix traditional Chinese techniques with new world pop art in a truly innovative collaboration. Yet days before the opening of his exhibit, Zevs hit the streets of Hong Kong looking to have a little fun. Equipped with a ladder and a bucket of black paint, Zevs, disguised in cleaning crew duds, adorned the Central District Chanel flagship store with his infamous Chanel liquidated image.  As he completed his mission and climbed down from the ladder, Chinese authorities were there waiting and immediately arrested him. Though his work may be regarded as pure artistic brilliance, Zevs idea of a good time might have cost him appearing at his own event.  Let’s just hope they release him in time.

On the flipside, we got more fresh new interviews and updates here…

*RH TV: A Dozen Things About Curren$y
Curren$y is currently in Chicago for tonight’s edition of Dimes and Dozens.  To go along with the event, Curren$y decided to let us in on a dozen things you may or may not have known about the Hot Spitta. Check out the video below and get the 12th piece of info tonight right here!

*RH TV: 5 Minutes W/The Knux at Rock The Bells
Footage from Rock The Bells continues to surface, as we present this quick interview the brother tandem known as The Knux.  This is the first time we’ve talked to The Knux since the release of their debut album, Remind Me In Three Days.  They talk about the reception of that album, their evolution of their live show, getting to start on new material, and more here.

Esser

*RH TV: 7 Minutes W/Esser
Esser stopped through the Windy City during his first extensive tour of the United States.  Signed to Chicago-based Chocolate Industries (The Cool Kids, Kid Sister), Esser’s debut album Braveface is a mixture of influences ranging from UK punk to American Hip Hop.  We dig into his sound, a couple choice tracks, what touring the states means to his UK fans, and Texas tattoos, right here.

*RH First Look: Donnis
Atlanta born Donnis knows all too well the meaning of travel, and contrary to Elizabeth Drew’s quote, his form of conversation is rhyming on a microphone. From Japan to New York, the young troubadour is far from the “basement recording rookie.” His life experiences have not only helped him personally, but also shaped his music, which became obvious in his recent sit-down with RubyHornet. Donnis spoke on everything from his culture shock in the big apple to his upcoming mixtape with a certain streetwear heavyweight, as well as leaving the dull points at the door.  Check it all out as Donnis gets under The First Look microscope right here.

*DJ Broadway Streetz: Conspiracy Theories
“The DJ’s influence has diminished somewhat. I am from the school of breaking records and paying your dues,” says DJ Broadway Streetz, a New York City breed, Chi-town living DJ who recently celebrated his new zip code with an all Chi-town mixtape, The Chicago Conspiracy.  The mixtape, released digitally via RubyHornet is also available in hard copies, something not found too often in the new digital age of distribution. Check it out here.
