Jason Goldwatch

If you’re lucky, you figure out some path in life, a calling, a passion, whatever you call it. It’s that the thing you felt you were born to do, a dream that becomes a job, and occupation that becomes a career.  For many, there comes a time or a moment when the light bulb clicks and that passion is discovered.  It doesn’t necessarily happen for everyone, and it certainly doesn’t come about in any conventional way.  You can’t schedule an appointment for it, nor can you do postpone it for a later date.  It just happens when it happens, and when it happens you definitely know it.  In a new series launching today, we visit that moment with various artists as they recount when their life’s path revealed itself and they discovered a potential career path.  We kick things off with Jason Goldwatch, a director, photographer, and co-owner of Decon.   I did an extensive interview with Jason about his career, coming up in L.A.’s underground, Jay Electronica, Kid Cudi, and much more.  That interview will be coming up shortly, but first peep his recount of when he found his calling thanks to a little help from Ricky Powell.

“I remember I was with a bunch of friends at a concert in San Francisco. It was The Beastie Boys with House of Pain and Cypress Hill.  The Beastie Boys were on stage and we were wylin… “Homeboy throw in the towel, your girl got dicked by Ricky Powell.”  And Ricky Powell came running out on stage with this camera around his neck, beer in his hand and he just looked wasted and having so much fun.  And they were all boys on stage.  They were interacting and he was jumping around getting angles, and I swear to god that was the point when I was like, ‘holy s**t bags, that is the move right there! Who is that?  That’s Ricky Powell? Holy F**k, and he’s in songs and this is his life?!?’ It just blew my wig back and that was the moment when I was like, ‘that’s what I’m going to do.”
