Eminem

Sometime on Sunday morning I had the idea to do “live-blogging” during the MTV Awards, and then publish the article every few minutes as a running commentary.  I was going to include things like, “9:07 PM: The pizza just came.  Delivery driver forgot the cans of soda.  A return trip is an option, but not a definite… Chelsea Handler just asked to get a ride home on someone’s face, like that is even feasible.”

I never had intentions of actually ordering a pizza, just writing about ordering one.  Thus I would create a hybrid story about the misadventures of half mushrooms/half pepperoni and the MTV Music Awards. I also realized that “live-blogging” is really Twitter, and pizza or no pizza, it just wasn’t that appealing.  However, I did take some notes during the show and have some thoughts I would like to share.

*That just wasn’t funny… Chelsea Handler tried, but sometimes trying isn’t good enough.  See face riding reference above.

*Do the awards even matter anymore? I remember watching the MTV Awards as a teenager and getting really excited about who actually won.  At this year’s VMA’s the focus was on performances, and the hope that more awkward/weird/controversial/alcohol induce s**t would happen.  It also felt like the same 5 artists were up for each category, with Eminem and Lady Gaga alternating victories.  While Gaga added a new outfit and self-defense styled headpiece, Eminem jetted following his performance, easily making it home to watch the early edition of “Entourage”.  The finale of old was the climatic awarding of “Video of The Year”.  This year the show’s most anticipated moment was a live performance by Kanye West, in which he premiered the never before heard “Runaway” featuring Pusha T… Oh yeah, I forgot.  MTV doesn’t play videos anymore.

*Taylor Swift made a song about Kanye West?… Perhaps it’s a song simply about the confusion of the early 30’s… yeah right. Taylor Swift performed a new song about midway through the VMA’s that appears to reference the most infamous moment in VMA history.  She’s been pretty much silent all year, even after Kanye West apologized one more time via his Twitter account, and penned a song for her.  Swift’s new tune was introduced by a clip from last year’s incident, and included lyrics such as “lost your balance on a tightrope… 32 and still growing up now/who you are is not what you did.”  Backhanded compliment or sincere apology acceptance?

*Note to self.  Find a huge animal mask for future DJ sets… This year’s VMAs definitely demonstrated the importance of headgear and accessories.  From Lady Gaga, to will.i.am, Swizz Beats to Deadmau5 (and especially Deadmau5) the hats and s**t that resembles hats were definitely in the building.

*The Times They Are A-Changin… “Twitteractions”, “trending topics”, ridiculous stage setups, and extravagant live performances were a real sign of the times.  I remember throughout the broadcast thinking to myself, ‘we are living in the future.’
