A month ago, we wrote about Jamie Foxx’ interest in playing Spawn in a proposed reboot of the mid-90s comic book adaptation. It’s been reported this week that Spawn creator Todd McFarlane is indeed going forward with a reboot for one of Image Comics’ most popular characters. However, instead of approaching the project as a “superhero” film, McFarlane wants to create it as more of a horror/thriller.

McFarlane states: “I think it’s a quick shoot. It’s not going to be a giant budget with a lot of special effects, it’s going to be more of a horror movie and a thriller movie, not a superhero one. I’ve got so many people phoning now that I’ve got to get it done. I’ve made some promises to people this year.”

Considering the film could release in 2015, one of the biggest film years for geek films (Star WarsBatman vs. SupermanThe Avengers: Age of Ultron), Spawn‘s appeal would definitely cater to larger audiences if it’s indeed created as a horror/thriller. It would better serve the comics’ tone, as well as allowing everybody working on the project some extra creative opportunities they wouldn’t otherwise be able to explore if it were tonally set as a straight superhero film.

We’ll see how everything progresses over the next few months, including whether or not Foxx will indeed play the lead role.
