The second trailer for Edge of Tomorrow is now out. Similar in style to the film’s first trailer, this new trailer features all new footage and an expansion on the film’s premise. Tom Cruise stars as William Cage, a military officer deployed into combat despite having no experience whatsoever. Upon touching down, he is instantly killed by a swarm of aliens attacking the earth. However, he wakes up just at the beginning of his deployment, triggering a loop that restarts after every death. Before long, he finds help from a fellow soldier, Rita Vrataski (Emily Blunt), who helps train him to fight in between deaths. With every subsequent “life” Cage lives, he gains experience and knowledge to help turn the tide against the aliens.

Edge of Tomorrow is based on the Japanese novel All You Need is Kill written by Hiroshi Sakurazaka. As has been stated about the film previously, it’s like the perfect mixture of Super Troopers and Groundhog Day, hopefully borrowing the best elements from each film. The domestic box office hasn’t been too kind to Cruise in recent years, but Edge of Tomorrow looks promising. There’s room in the film’s premise to explore the philosophical ramifications of living and dying multiple times, and this new trailer touches upon those aspects a bit. I don’t want Edge of Tomorrow to be come a heavy-handed existential sci-fi film, but I wouldn’t mind the film at least bringing the topic up for discussion.

Edge of Tomorrow will be in theaters on June 6th.
