Here’s hoping we get a trailer soon,” my fine friend Alex Katz said just this morning in regards to this morning’s first look at the upcoming CGI film, The Book of Life. Little did we know that the new trailer would come just a few short hours later. As Alex so eloquently put it, the film is about two childhood friends (played by 22 Jump Street‘s Channing Tatum and Cesar Chavez‘s Diego Luna) competing for the love of Maria (Guardians of the Galaxy‘s Zoe Saldana). The love triangle attracts the attention of two gods who each wager on who Maria will fall for. However, when Manolo (Luna) is about to win Maria’s heart, one of the gods sabotages his chances, sending him across three different worlds.

The Book of Life looks absolutely stunning, full of vivid colors and a design style that mimics marionette puppetry. The mythical connection to the Day of the Dead is interesting, as well, as I don’t know of many films, especially animated films, that build off of the mythos surrounding La Dia de los Muertos. With Guillermo del Toro’s involvement, I feel like The Book of Life could be something special.

We’ll all find out when the film is released in theaters on October 17th.
