Gone are the days when Matthew McConaughey would just be another smiling Dapper Dan in light romantic-comedies. Since 2010, McConaughey’s drifted away from rom-coms, instead focusing his attention on drama-centric films that truly display the scope of his talents. It’s been a good career change for the Austin native as he’s received fine accolades for MudThe Lincoln Lawyer, and Killer Joe. With a role in Martin Scorsese’s upcoming The Wolf on Wall Street, McConaughey’s doing everything he can to distance himself from his past roles. However, it’s his role in Dallas Buyers Club that, I believe, will push him towards serious critical acclaim.

Based on a true story, McConaughey plays the role of Ron Woodroof, a Dallas man diagnosed with HIV in 1986. Told he only had a month to live, Woodroof desperately searches for an alternative to the FDA-approved AZT that he was prescribed. With the help of his doctor Eve (Jennifer Garner) and a transsexual (Jared Leto), Woodroof begins smuggling medicine in from around the world. Before long, he begins running the “Dallas Buyers Club,” a membership-based club that shared the alternate meds with other HIV-positive members. Despite the medicine being approved around the world, the FDA hears of Woodroof’s operation, the organization and numerous pharmaceutical companies aim to bring him down.

Apple has the exclusive trailer. Once an embeddable version of the trailer is up, I’ll update this post accordingly. Dallas Buyers Club will infect theaters on November 1st.
