Denzel Washington has always been a badass, and anybody who disagrees simply doesn’t know what quantifies badassitude. The height of Denzel’s career came in 2001 when he won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in Training Day. Directed by Antoine Fuqua (Olympus Has Fallen) and written by David Ayer (Sabotage), Training Day highlighted Washington’s shift into a role he wasn’t known for playing up to that point in his career. With Washington and Fuqua teaming up again for this year’s The Equalizer, expectations are pretty high to see the pairing regain the glory they were able to capture at the turn of the century.

The Equalizer is a film adaptation of the ’80s TV series of the same name. While I’m not familiar with the show, I can share what the film is about. Washington plays McCall, a retired black ops agent that faked his death to live peacefully. However, when a young girl he meets (Chloe Grace Moretz) becomes abducted, he takes it upon himself to rescue her from a Russian mob syndicate. The decision triggers a sense of justice that laid dormant in McCall, leading him to live a life as a vigilante, taking the justice into his own hands to “equalize” the negativity around him.

The Equalizer opens on September 26th.
