Buddy cop films have a long standing place in Hollywood that will (hopefully) never go away. Classic films like Die HardBad Boys, and Beverly Hills Cop paved the way for some of the more humorous films of the ’90s such as the Rush Hour and Men In Black series, while more contemporary films like 21 Jump Street (and its sequel, 22 Jump Street) have featured a solid mix of comedy and action. Also, who can forget David Ayer‘s spectacular film, End of Watch? Needless to say, buddy cop films have always been vehicles for actors to explore new genres in entertaining ways.

Let’s Be Cops throws a wrench into what we’ve come to expect from the genre. Damon Wayans, Jr. (New Girl) and Jake Johnson (New GirlDrinking Buddies) star as two friends unsure of what to attend a costume party as… until they decide to dress up as cops. After finding their costumes popular and successful, they decide to go the whole nine yards, investing in police scanners and outfitting an old police car with decals and lights. However, they soon find themselves way in over their heads when they become tangled in a very real crime situation involving the mob, crooked cops, and all types of illegal shenanigans they’re ill-equipped for.

I’m a huge Jake Johnson fan (and not just because he’s from the Chicagoland area), and having him star in a very promising comedy should do well for his film career. Let’s Be Cops won’t be in theaters until August 13th, but you can enjoy this first trailer to help lessen the long wait.
