Life of a King finds Cuba Gooding, Jr. returning to form as an ex-convict helping inner-city kids get their lives together through chess. Inspired by a true story, Gooding, Jr. plays Eugene Brown, a man who toiled away in a DC prison for 18 years. Upon release, he starts the Big Chair Chess Club to guide high school students away from the street life he himself fell victim to years ago.
The trailer surely dramatizes some of the real-life events, but that doesn’t take away from the emotional impact. Chess has long been a deterrent against life’s struggles, especially for city kids. Life of a King follows in the line of such films, and with Gooding, Jr. in the mix, Life of a King could receive some good acclaim upon its release on January 17th.
