Ping Pong Summer caught some notable buzz at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, so much so that I’ve been attempting to see it since (scheduling conflicts during SXSW also prevented my ability to catch it last month). The best thing about festival films is that the really great ones find distribution sooner than later, as is true with Ping Pong Summer, with a targeted June 6th theatrical and VOD release date.

With June just around the corner, the film’s first official trailer was released recently. Written and directed by Michael Tully, Ping Pong Summer is a coming of age period piece set in the summer of 1985. Newcomer Marcello Conte is a young teenager on a summer vacation with his family in Ocean City, Maryland. While there, he discovers his love for hip hop and ping pong, two things that naturally go together. As can be seen in this first trailer, the nostalgia level is through the roof, and the quirkiness among the cast appears to be legitimately funny and not a running one-off joke.

We’ll be keeping Ping Pong Summer on our radars.
