Even though The Skeleton Twins stars two SNL alum in Bill Hader (They Came Together) and Kristen Wiig (Bridesmaids), the film is just as dark and moody as it is funny. Directed by Craig Johnson (True Adolescents) on a script co-written by Johnson and Black Swan scribe Mark Heyman, The Skeleton Twins takes two established comedians in the aforementioned Hader and Wiig and sets them as estranged twins who have fallen out of contact since high school. Upon reuniting, they realize how much they have (and haven’t) changed as the two of them discover how broken their lives have been without one another.

I caught The Skeleton Twins at Sundance this year (read my full review here) and really enjoyed it, praising both Hader and Wiig’s performances. It’s a different film than most fans of their work may expect, but one that I thoroughly enjoyed in a direction I hope the pair explore as their careers continue. The writing featured some of Sundance’s best, winning the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award at the festival. The trailer doesn’t reveal too much of the film’s plot, but does share some of the best highlights, including the “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now” singalong between Hader and Wiig.

The Skeleton Twins will be in theaters on September 19th.
