Wing Chun grandmaster Ip Man has received a lot of film attention over the past few years with the most popular being Ip Man and Ip Man 2 starring Donnie Yen as the man who mentored Bruce Lee. Noted Hong Kong film director Wong Kar-wai (Fallen Angels) is taking the reins with Tony Leung Chiu-Wai (Hard Boiled) portraying Ip Man with choreography from Woo-ping Yuen (The Matrix). The film takes place throughout his life instead of focusing on one specific period.
The Grandmaster looks very stylized… perhaps too stylized. I’m not sure if it’ll be able to supplant the aforementioned Ip Man films, especially in regards to Yen’s performances in them. However, I’m open to seeing another take on Ip Man’s story. The film will be released in theaters on August 23rd.
