The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is a remake of the 1947 film of the same name inspired by a short story written by James Thurber. In the modern remake, Walter Mitty (Ben Stiller) is a LIFE proofreader whose imagination sometimes gets the best of him. In his daydreams, he is the hero of his own story, which is a direct contrast to the reality in which he’s a bit of a pushover. However, when both his and his co-worker’s (Kristen Wiig) jobs are threatened, he rises to the occasion to save their occupations.

What’s intriguing about the trailer is how the reality scenes will work alongside the fantasy scenes. I’m not familiar with the original film or short story, but it seems like the daydream sequences will transition seamlessly throughout the film, which would be a cool touch for the drama film. Stiller is also directing the film, making it the first film he’s directed since 2001’s Zoolander. I enjoy his dramatic roles just a much as his comedic performances, and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty‘s looking like a solid pick for an Adapted Screenplay Oscar.

The film, which will be in theaters on Christmas Day, also stars Sean Penn, Adam Scott, Patton Oswalt, and Shirley Maclaine.

Ben Stiller directs and stars in THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY, James Thurber’s classic story of a day-dreamer who escapes his anonymous life by disappearing into a world of fantasies filled with heroism, romance and action. When his job along with that of his co-worker (Kristen Wiig) are threatened, Walter takes action in the real world embarking on a global journey that turns into an adventure more extraordinary than anything he could have ever imagined.
