We Are What We Are is an American remake of the Mexican horror film, Somos lo que hay, about a family harboring a deep, dark secret. You can get the gist of what that secret is as you watch the trailer. However, what I found interesting about this first look is that “big reveal” typically found in horror film trailers never actually came. There’s no jump scare where some ghastly image instantly appears and disappears to shock viewers, there’s no gore-y weapon coyly positioned slightly off-frame, or anything. Instead, the trailer just builds more and more tension until… it ends. I’m in full support of this.

Apparently, the film found some good support, as well, as reviews from this year’s Sundance have been very positive. We can all find out for ourselves as We Are What We Are will have a limited theatrical release on September 27th.
