Travis Scott + Brian McKnight tease new video

Travis Scott’s album Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight has a lot of trap music and a lot of singing – but no Brian McKnight. Well, the young Houston rapper remedied that situation by releasing a video featuring the R&B legend playing his 1993 song “One Last Cry” while La Flame looks on moodily and releases doves into the air. The video, enigmatically entitled “Bitch U Broke My Heart,” is an emotional setpiece that sums up Travis Scott’s bad boy demeanor. It’s not clear who exactly broke Travis Scott’s heart (Rihanna, perhaps?) but you can tell it’s really eating at him. Brian McKnight provides the perfect accompaniment, using his classic song to hilarious effect.

Turns out the connection between Birds in the Trap and McKnight is a Quavo lyric off “pick up the phone”. The Migos member compares his knack for selling that white metaphor-of-your-choosing with McKnight’s musical talent. It’s typical of Migos wordplay – a bit of a stretch, not that there’s anything wrong with that. Apparently Travis Scott liked this turn of phrase enough to name his whole album after it. Actually, the punchline finds its way back to an even earlier song, “In My Hands”, off Mike WiLL’s 2014 Ransom mixtape.

So we have Migos, Mike WiLL, and Brian McKnight to thank for Travis Scott’s new project and the video above. It’s a bit weird that the whole connection came down to a head-scratcher Quavo metaphor. And it’s typical of Travis Scott that his inspiration came from another artist. Let’s not forget that “pick up the phone” itelf started out as a Young Thug collab with a different artist. But if Brian McKnight himself is down with it, you can’t knock the movement. Peep the video above, and be sure to check out Birds in the Trap.
