Upcoming Mondo Gallery exhibition featuring Mike Mitchell’s film character portraits

Artwork for film promotion can sometimes go undetected or underrated. The posters hung up in theaters across the country tend to be bland, uninspired pieces of work that try to capture some element of the movie that would appeal to casual audiences. Unfortunately, this leads to cookie cutter posters of explosions, weapons, protagonists looking off to the side, etc. However, there are artists and groups of people who are attempting to bring a more artistic nature back to movie poster art.

Perhaps the largest and most well known groups is Mondo, an Austin, Texas-based division of the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema franchise. They champion limited edition collectible prints for a large number of films to help promote a return to amazing poster art design. (You can find more information about Mondo here.)

From time to time, Mondo’s physical gallery space showcases exhibitions from various artists and their works. For the next month, the Mondo Gallery will be showcasing the artwork of Mike Mitchell; specifically, it will consist of character portraits from a multitude of films. While the actual exhibition will have about thirty of these displayed, we have a few of the portraits in the gallery below, so check them out! Some personal favorites are of the Driver from Drive, Judge Dredd from Dredd, Oh Dae-Su from Oldboy, and Mr. Pink from Reservoir Dogs.

If you find yourself in Austin, TX sometime in the next month, I recommend you check the exhibition out. More of Mitchell’s work can be found here.
