Chief Keef

Chief Keef is on a media run right now leading up to his appearance on Saturday at Lollapalooza.  During a recent trip to NYC, Keef stopped by the Rap Genius offices, I’m assuming his intent was to explain his lyrics or at least talk about them.  However, in the video we see below, The Rap Genius staff rolls up a few blunts and a vaporizer, and smoke a lot of weed.  By the time the smoke session is over, Keef is too high to explain the true meaning behind his music.

Rather than give Keef water, or some time to collect his thoughts, or even just scrapping the footage, they title the video “Chief Keef Gets TOO HIGH to Explain His Lyrics On RAP GENIUS.”  I get it. It’s about content these days, and Keef is hot right now.  Plus, headlines like that are sure to grab attention. But in reality this kid is 17 and at an important time in his career.  I think sometimes Keef is made into a joke, or covered in a way that sees him as little more than a novelty.  It’s his choice to smoke weed and forget this lyrics. And it sucks when that happens. I’ve been in many situations where an artist is too high or drunk to do what they need to do properly and we lose footage and time.  But it’s all part of the game. I’m not mad at Rap Genius. I actually really like RG, and regularly check out the site. But this kind of situation, I don’t like at all.
