Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill have stuck lightning twice as their latest buddy film, 22 Jump Street, opened to an estimated $60m this weekend to take the top spot on the box office. However, the second place film, How to Train Your Dragon 2, opened to a just as strong $50m debut. The Weekend of Sequels, as I’m referring to it right now, runs more in line with X-Men: Days of Future Past‘s sequel success (which itself made $9.5m for 6th place) while the summer’s other big sequel, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, recently made $700m worldwide, but performed poorly domestically. Last week’s top film, The Fault in Our Stars, made $15.7m, but dropped to 5th place. Angelina Jolie’s Maleficent edged out Tom Cruise’s Edge of Tomorrow, $19m to $16m.
