Qwel

“It’s the road, it’s the life I chose.”

Qwel and Maker released 3rd album Owl in the fall of 2010.  The LP was released on the storied Chicago label Galapagos4.  One of the album’s stand out and most heartfelt tracks in “El Camino”, a song about the ups and downs of life on the road.  Qwel and Maker are ironically right at home with such subject matter, as their accompanying fall tour saw them do 57 shows in 65 days.  “El Camino” is also a song that Qwel did not originally want to make.   He told us in an interview,

“I didn’t wanna do it at first… I think my girl was sayin’, ‘yall get to go on the road I’m kinda jealous.’ And I was like, ‘yea but baby you forgot, it’s much cooler on stage when it’s a full house. But not when you’re carrying around equipment, cleaning up, sitting in a van for 17 hours with dirty dude-feet, and eating nothing but f**king Fritos and Slushies.  It seems cool because you don’t have to eat that shit, m.f.’s like us started lookin’ at broccoli like, ‘Oh my God this place has broccoli!’…  On the real it ain’t all glory.  It’s a lot of B.S., hangovers, and sore throats.  So me and Maker made that song for us to listen to on the road, a little bit of the poison is a little bit of the medicine.
