In a new interview with HardknockTV, DJ Rhettmatic of the world famous Beat Junkies, and the newly launched Crown Royale crew with Buff1 of Athletic Mic League, talks about his experiences as a “Hip Hopper that happens to be Asian American.” DJ Rhettmatic, along with DJ Babu and DJ Qbert are just a small part of a large Asian American community with deep contributions to Hip Hop culture. Speaking specifically on his earlier days, Rhettmatic told HipHopDX that he faced some criticism and skepticism from inside and outside of the Filipino community, but that once he earned his stripes and proved himself, he was embraced. Hip Hop has always been a great arena to discuss race and ethnicity, as well as examine stereotypes and prejudices. It is one of the biggest things that drew me to Hip Hop music and culture, and this is a good watch for anyone interested in the same.
