Earlier today I spoke to Rockie Fresh for a quick interview with the rising emcee. We’ve been following Rockie’s career since the very beginning, and I still remember working with him on his earliest mixtape, Rockie’s Modern Life. A lot has changed with Rockie since then, as he’s grown leaps and bounds musically as well as personally. Earlier this week, Rockie was in New York City where he spit a freestyle for MTV2 Sucker Free, rocked with Casey Veggies, and was even recognized by High Times as one of Hip Hop’s best smokers. “This was actually one of my best New York trips,” Rockie told me about the trip. “So many dreams came to life. I always wanted to be on MTV. I used to watch Sucker Free all the time. I still do when I can watch TV. It was a blessing to be able to do that. I got to do an interview with High Times. I remember seeing Cudi and Snoop and Wiz, people like that, that I always respected being able to do those interviews. For them to reach out and want to interview me, or respect me as a real smoker, that’s kind of cool.”
Another dream maybe coming true very soon for Rockie as well. There have been rumors that Rockie Fresh has gotten offers from record labels left and right, including some pretty big names. While Rockie can’t say specifically who’s interested, he did confirm the talks. He told me, “People you just named are definitely reaching out. I’m really excited where Chicago is going and the amount of people that did sign deals, such as YP and Chief Keef, Lil’ Durk and Lil’ Reese,” he said, willing to take his time for the best situation.
“As excited as I am about having the opportunity to join that list of people, I still got a different type of movement. With all things that we built, I’m pursuing each situation with caution. Pretty much every label has reached out in some form or fashion and has taken a serious interest in the situation. Now it’s just that I really got to navigate it.”
Rockie is currently in the studio working on a follow-up to his recently released Driving 88. He spoke to me about his new music, where he is in his career, and much more. Check back to RH next week for the full interview. And keep an eye out on Rockie’s situation, it seems like a deal could happen very soon. “It’s a very equal battle right now,” Rockie added. “With that, we’re just looking for a couple of people to take some steps past other labels. But it’s very possible man, in the next week, or maybe longer than that. When it goes down, I’ll definitely let you know.”
