Wale checked in with DJ Drama on Friday via the shoe store Boiler Room out in DC, where he was celebrating his birthday weekend. Wasting no time, Drama goes right into Kid Cudi’s Complex Magazine cover story where Cudi had a few choice words for Mr. Folarin. To do a quick refresh…
“Then people like Wale get mad that ‘Ye ain’t give him no beats—’Ye ain’t give you no beats because we ain’t fucking with your raps. It’s not a conspiracy theory. We don’t fuck with you musically, so we’re not going to provide music for you. The shit is a service, it’s a quality of a certain standard. Niggas are just so thirsty it’s ridiculous. I’ve been eating humble pie forever, and people still call me an asshole. These people don’t know my fucking life—now I’m going to give them something to talk about.”
Drama asked Wale about the Kid Cudi reference from his “Thank You” freestyle that kicked everything off, which Wale said, “it’s just line. I could use your name for a metaphor. It’s just rap music. There’s no malice out of it… It is what it is. It’s a line. That’s what rappers do… 9/10 rappers wouldn’t take that as a diss… Sometimes I’m the king of diamonds and I like to throw my wallet around… It’s just a line, it’s all in fun. As I’m growing as an artist and a man you see what you got to do… why you keep your circle small.”
Drama then asks Wale about Cudi’s comments regarding Kanye West, and while the public probably wants to hear Wale go off on Cudi, he stays calm throughout. Pulling a Mark McGwire, Wale chooses instead to focus on the good things. “It’s obviously something behind all this… Ye’s a good dude or whatever, I don’t recall making too much of an effort to work with anybody. I’m signed to Roc Nation, there are great producers… It ain’t that deep. It’ ain’t 2001 where a producer is end all be all… The love is in abundance like it’s never been before. I’m truly blessed… I’m just where the love is.”
Wale played his cards well on air, let’s see what happens on record. Wale is known to be in the studio constantly. I wouldn’t be surprised if we get a new track with some Cudi digs. I just can’t see him letting Cudi go that far without some kind of response (besides his twitter comment).
