It's no secret that Chicago is a violent city. Sadly, it has become part of the city's history, and it just keeps getting worse. Gun violence and gangs have become an epidemic in Chicago, and the murder rates continue to soar everyday. Due to the murder rate, the city is now being referred to by a new name, Chiraq, because of those who feel the city resembles the war-stricken country of Iraq. British filmmaker Will Robson-Scott has gone to the West & South Side of Chicago to document the lives of those who are affected by the violence on the streets.

The film is set to release on August 13th of this year.

Huntington Beach Disturbances 1986 & 2013

On July 28th, public disturbances broke out on the streets of Huntington Beach following the U.S. Opening of Surfing. According to Kyle Calder, "The melee started when someone was hit with a ketchup bottle from a second-story restaurant." This ended up triggering a fight that escalated to a small scale riot taking place. It went from a few unruly people fighting to people knocking over portapotties, and it eventually lead to people throwing a stop sign through a store window. People were asked to leave by the police, but many tried to stand their ground, leading to officers releasing tear gas and rubber rounds that eventually stopped the crowd.

This wasn't the first time that an incident like this happened following a surfing event in Huntington Beach - a similar event happened in 1986 where hundreds of people got in a confrontation with police throwing rocks and bottles, and people even lit cars on fire following the Ocean Pacific Pro Surfing Championships. What set off this riot were "two or more men behind the bleachers immediately south of the Huntington Beach Pier who were trying to take off the bathing suits of two young women." This was a similar event, but two totally different incidents and time periods. What was supposed to be a great day of surfing was overshadowed by these two disturbances. Check out the photos below from both incidents and for more, visit the LA Times from 2013 & 1986.

The World Of Abandoned Asylums

Many institutions dedicated to helping people with various mental health disorders sometimes were far from a place where people got help. Unfortunately, many asylums where just a place where people were discarded and were not treated for their supposed symptoms or disorders. Many people in these asylums were mistreated and subjected to terrible living standards that no human being should have to live through. Due to unethical practices and building conditions, many of these asylums were left to rot. The photos below are of such asylums that were abandoned, and by the looks of them, are what horror stories are made of. For more photos and stories about these abandoned asylums visit io9 here.

David Choe & Estevan Oriol Afghanistan Trip For JUXTAPOZ

David Choe's recent trip to Afghanistan was captured by photographer Estevan Oriol for the latest issue of Juxtapoz magazine. The graffiti artist had his entire trip documented, and this series of photos were the ones that weren't able to make the print issue. The photos that Estevan took show Choe in a variety of settings, and is seen creating art, interacting with locals, and visiting parts of Afghanistan that have been affected by war. Oriol captured some very interesting images and gave us a small glimpse of Afghanistan. If these weren't able to make the cut, I am interested to see the photos that did make the issue.

Irina Shayk For GQ Russia

Sports Illustrated model Irina Shayk graces the cover of the August issue of GQ Russia. For this shoot, Irina ditches the bikinis and white sandy beaches to gives us a more grungy look. Photographer David Roemer took some great shots of Irina and really captured a side of her we don't normally see. Styled in nothing but all black outfits and a lot of leather, the shoot looks like scenes straight out of Death Race. If you're not located in Russia at this time, you can see the photo spread below.

China's Last Gunslingers

We've all probably heard the saying "You live by the gun, die by the gun." Well the people that live in the village of Biasha located in the Guizhou Province of China might take the saying to an entirely different level. The villagers have firearms deeply rooted in their culture. As some of you might know, gunpowder was invented in China, and for something that was invented in the country, you would think guns would be readily available, but that's not the case. The reason being is that the citizens of China are prohibited from owning firearms.

The exception to the rule is the men of Biasha who, by law, are allowed to carry and use guns as it's a part of their cultural tradition. As anthropologist Louisa Schein states, "Minority groups have long been granted exceptions to laws that govern the rest of China." Because of this, the village people are able to make money as they perform certain rituals for tourists that come to visit and learn about their culture, most notably guns. For more on China's last gunslingers head on over to National Geographic here.
