[EP] Hot Sugar: MiDi Murder

It had eluded us until this week, but New York City producer Hot Sugar released his MiDi Murder tape a few weeks back through Scion A/V, the same heads responsible for Danny Brown’s hit “Grown Up”. Using a bevy of sounds collected by Hot Sugar from daily city life, the EP features bars from rappers such as KOOL A.D. and Heems of Das Racist, Big Baby Gandhi (the other half of Hott 97, one of Hot Sugar’s projects), and Nasty Nigel of the Children of the Night collective. Also featured is 100s, the highly-acclaimed California rapper with an image straight out of 1985. Yet perhaps the most talked-about element of MiDi Murder is Hot Sugar’s creative censorship. Because Scion wouldn’t release the songs with curses, many swear words have been replaced with the sound of Hot Sugar’s girlfriend and gorgeous Bay Area rapper Kitty Pryde playing with her lady parts. Head here to grab a free download of the EP as well as watch Hot Sugar collecting sounds for the tape below.

Diggy Simmons Rehashes J. Cole Beef with "Fall Down"

Back when the two were seemingly on good terms

Diggy rekindled old beef with J. Cole this morning on New York radio station Power 105.1’s “The Breakfast Club”. Diggy spat a freestyle taking shots at Cole; most of his rhymes called him out on rapping about having sex with his older sister, Vanessa Simmons, who Cole rapped about in his 2010 song “Purple Rain”. This past April, Diggy came back with the song “What You Say To Me”, which called into question Cole’s history with Vanessa, his sexual preferences, and the man who brought him to Roc Nation, Jay-Z.

Over time the beef seemed to have cooled, with neither rapper mentioning the other throughout the summer. Yet while performing with Kendrick Lamar in North Carolina last week, Cole said, “Picture me hatin’ on a young n***a with talent… Caked out on his allowance.” Diggy came back on “The Breakfast Club” to premiere the track, which used the same arsenal of material as “What You Say To Me”. The most notable line is, “Maybe you shoulda signed with me instead of Mr. Carter / How you mad at me? I got a relationship with my father.”

While it remains to be seen whether or not J. Cole was actually romantically involved with Vanessa, Diggy has used the exact same ideas every time he has insulted Cole, and it seems he has nothing new to say about his dislike of the North Carolina MC. More importantly, he calls J. Cole out on both not being signed by Def Jam as well as not having a father. As much as the talking heads on Power 105.1 love Diggy’s boldness, he is a seventeen year-old boy whose most impressive accomplishment is his last name. In mocking J. Cole for his relationship or lack thereof with his father, something completely out of his control, Diggy comes across as the spoiled, privileged brat, just as Cole has depicted him. Listen to the clip containing the diss and the following 105.1 commentary below and let us know what you think.

ShowYouSuck Responds To Chicago Reader Cover

ShowYouSuck

Today the Chicago Reader released its weekly issue. If you saw it on newsstands, you were greeted by a large "Insert Rapper Here" mugshot.  The cover story inside is a look at Chicago's bubbling Hip Hop scene and its connection to Chicago's streetwear culture and the Chicago's local clothing brands that power it such as LDRS1354, Jugrnaut, St. Alfred, and the newly launched City of W1n.  The piece has caused quite a stir in the Hip Hop community, especially the cover photo, which masks the face of ShowYouSuck and to some, insinuates that Chicago artists are interchangeable.   ShowYouSuck and his team reached out to RubyHornet with a statement on the cover and the article, and asked us to present it to our readers.  See Show's statement below.

Vic Spencer: "Kiss My Ass From Spain"

Vic Spencer

Vic Spencer is giving new meaning to the phrase "strike while the iron is hot."  The Brainiac emcee has been feeding us a steady diet of freestyles and unreleased tracks over the last week, and ends the week with the boastful, "Kiss My Ass From Spain".  The production is handled by IKAZ from France, and this will set the table for Vic's forthcoming video "National Geographical", dropping right here on rubyhornet.

BJ The Chicago Kid: "His Pain" feat Kendrick Lamar

This is a true gem. Kendrick Lamar and BJ The Chicago Kid go the speakeasy route on "His Pain". The song draws distinctions between the blessed and the cursed, and then shows how quickly lines can be blurred.  This is supposedly a leftover from Kendrick's #Section80, as the title suggests as well.  It will now appear on BJ The Chicago Kid's forthcoming "His Pain".
