"Hold your own or he's taking your spot."
Check out this bonus track from Jay Are's recently released LP, The 1960's Jazz Revolution Again....
Hardwerk and Jansport J: "Wow"
"Tried to play us when we came up, now we're playing with the majors."
Hardwerk and Jansport J send us their second joint from High Power Moves, hitting the web 11/10/09. Listen to and download "Wow" below.
Jovi Rockwell: "Killin' Dem"
"On their tippy-toes, but I'm still out of reach."
Jovi Rockwell is one of my early picks for the new class of 2010. Rockwell's no rookie, but with her forthcoming mixtape, Psycho Therapy, with production from Diplo and co-signed by the likes of RH and Okayplayer, she'll see exposure like never before. We took a First Look at Jovi a few weeks ago, and she returns here with "Killin Dem", a synth and groove heavy joint that describes exactly what she's about to do fans, critics, and guys alike. Grab/listen below.

$ulaiman: "On Your Mark"
"I feel at home here like DJ's do with the crates..."
You always start with your name, date, and homeroom and $ulaiman (formerly the Native Soul) does just that with "On Your Mark", a teaser track to his cumulative piece, Black Ribbon Hardwork! The beat is courtesy of Beatmaker, and the song's teaser nature is just that, as Suli introduces his new name, and gives us just enough to want more. I'm not sure what motivated the name change, but if the new name brings more new music like this, I'm all for it. Warriors up!

Brother Ali: "The Freshest Kids" featuring Toki Wright, Evidence Video
Brother Ali is back on the road (what else is new?). This time around he is touring in support of his recently released LP, Us. And he has taken Rhymesayers label mates Toki Wright and Evidence along for the ride. The three got together in a bit of clever marketing and created a theme-song for the tour. "The Freshest Kids" is not a gimmicky jingle, but a very dope song and stands on it's on, supporting tour or not. Brother Ali, mean mugging emcee...no, we salute you. Catch The Fresh Air Tour when it hits your city.

KRS One: The Ying And Yang of Def Jam
Oh KRS, you never let us down. Each time someone puts a camera or recorder in your face you take full advantage. Keeping with tradition, KRS was stopped on the Red Carpet of VH1's Hip Hop Honors and asked about Def Jam's legacy. He said that Def Jam is the dopest Hip Hop label. "Without Def Jam there would be no Hip Hop." But, just as Radio Raheem sported the love and the hate on each hand, KRS follows it up by saying that Def Jam also single-handily destroyed Hip Hop. Hear the teacher out, as he makes some good points. You bring Hip Hop to the masses, you fuel it's growth. At some point that growth gets too much, the masses don't get it, and it changes. I'm staying out of this one personally, cause it's just too early and I'm in the same Mikkey Halsted sweatshirt I wore last night to the Mayer Hawthorne show. Haven't even gone home and I'm at the office son...don't sleep...Anyway, let me toot my own horn while you check out the video below. Props to XXL.

RH TV: Mayer Hawthorne Live In Chicago 9.25.09
The man, the myth the legend took the stage at the Dark Room last night for his first live show in the Windy City. Complete with his band The County, Hawthorne sent up a roughly hour long set, and continually asked the crowd if they "felt the love?". Playing tracks from his Stones Throw debut, A Strange Arrangement (out now), Hawthorne joked with the crowd and to quote Wyclef, "pumped the positivity".
Hawthorne's band did extended and alternate versions of album cuts, as well as non-album tracks and classic soul covers. RubyHornet had a front room spot and captured some of his set on our new Flipcam, shouts to them for hooking it up. Below you will find Hawthorne's opening song, "Maybe So, Maybe No", the original and reggae version of "Just Ain't Gonna Work Out", and my personal favorite "The Ills", which Hawthorne performed as an encore after the sell-out crowd just would not leave. Check them out below, share them with your friends, and all that. Look for our exclusive interview with Mayer coming soon as well. Do you feel the love yet? Shouts to Coldgrums and Groundlift for putting the show together.
