Unless you’ve been under a rock for the last couple days, you’ve seen and heard #10Day, the new mixtape from Chicago’s Chance The Rapper. Since the mixtape’s release on April 3rd, Chance has packed the boutique Jugrnaut, opened up for Dom Kennedy, and been the owner of two trending topics on Twitter with #10Day and the title of his song “Juke Juke”. It’s been somewhat of a whirlwind for the Chicago artist who set about creating #10Day more than a year ago after being suspended from high school. Chance stopped by SoundScape yesterday for an in-depth interview in which he talked about growing up in Chicago, attending Jones Prep, his family’s role in his music, and even his sound before that fateful suspension that really kicked off his career.
With #10Day out and getting great reviews, Chance also spoke to me about his future plans, which include working on more music and figuring out the direction he’d like to take his career. While he admitted to having talks with some labels, he’s not certain that a label deal is his best move right now. He told me, “I’m honestly not sure what I want to do. I know for a fact that I don’t want to be a shelved artist or an artist that’s on the back burner, like throwing up Young Money, but behind Drake and everybody. I’m not really down for that shit. I feel like we’ll be doing a lot of stuff independent for a while, but the people can expect a lot of new singles going up on iTunes pretty soon. Definitely a lot of visuals from #10Day.”
Chance also mentioned that he is going to keep working with fellow Chicago-based artists and producers like Thelonious Martin and Million $ Mano, as well as Thomas Foolery and DJ Suchandsuch, who both lend production to #10Day. In addition, Chance ran down a wish-list of collaborators, including another Chicago native, Jeremih “I want to work with Jeremih really bad,” he said, eying the singer for a possible “Juke Juke” remix. “A lot of people are falling in love with that joint. I think Jeremih really has a very well-rounded sound about him and something that a lot of people can relate to. A lot of people don’t even know he’s from Chicago, but he’s definitely Chicago bred, and an ill-ass artist. I definitely want to work with Jeremih,”
Other artists on Chance’s wishlist include Mac Miller, Hodgy Beats, and his favorite artist, Rick Roos. “I want to work with Rick Ross very badly, very very badly. He’s my favorite artist. Rick Ross and Kendrick Lamar are my favorite artists. I want to work with Kendrick Lamar. I’d love to do some shit with Kanye actually. I used to joke all the time about how I hated Odd Future, but I honestly would love to work with Tyler. I met Hodgy out in L.A. and he’s cool as fuck, very down to earth. I would love to work with Hodgy… I want to do a collabo with Beirut. They actually have a very prevalent sound on #10Day, not just on “Long Time” and “Long Time 2″, but just the way they orchestrate their tracks and the way that they mix all of their songs, that’s definitely a huge influence on the sound that #10Day has. But I would love to work with Beirut, I want to do a song with Ludacris, Bun B, Drake, Lil’ Wayne, there’s so many people. Mac Miller is my boy, Mac, if you see this, you’re my fucking boy. I want to do some shit with Mac. Some more shit with Chuck and Mikey, more shit with the Blended Babies,” he concluded.
