Being a part of a band or a group is kind of like being married. For better or worse, you’re tied to your partner or partners, and everyone needs to do their part for the ship to sail.  Being part of a group or crew also allows for artists to share the weight. Instead of carrying a whole song, you only need to carry a verse or a hook.  When you’re on stage, there is always someone there for a fill-in.  This week Sir Michael Rocks of the Cool Kids will release his new solo project, Lap of Lux.  He is then preparing for his own solo tour.  For many artists, going solo is like a reinvention of sorts, one that is not a sure thing and can be pretty difficult.  But, it can be done and Hip Hop has a long history of artists that have started inside of a group and went on to achieve tremendous solo success as well. Here’s our list of 12 artists that have made such a transition.  Peep the list and let us know your thoughts, and who we missed.

And yes, I know there are I grouped some together for counting purposes… Enjoy.
