If we’re going to take time out for Sesame Street’s 40th Birthday, it’s only right that we pause for a moment in honor of America’s Veterans as well as those currently in our armed services. In connection to Veterans day, I have put together this simple playlist of songs fitting for the occasion. They are songs that directly or indirectly pretain to war and/or the military and have a certain vibe or feel to them. The playlist is not meant to be exhaustive, but casual. This is not meant to be a definitive ‘these songs best sum up Veteran’s Day type of thing’. They are just good songs with a message that I feel should be listened to on a day like this. Some are celebratory, others critical. Keep reading to see and listen to the full list.
Creedance Clearwater Revival: “Run Through The Jungle”
Let’s start with a song that many people thought was directly about the Vietnam war, but actually wasn’t. Creedance made previous protest songs such as “Fortunate Son”, and the timing and sound of “Run Through The Jungle” lead many to believe this was of a similar ilk. While those sentiments reside in the tune, it is more directly speaking on America’s overabundance of guns, and obsession of violence.
Rhymefest: “Bullet”
[audio: http://rubyhornet.com/media/rh/music/rhymefest_bullet.mp3|width=180]By far my favorite Rhymefest song, and one that deals directly with the war in Iraq, as well as who is predominantly fighting it.
Bob Dylan: “John Brown”
[audio: http://rubyhornet.com/media/rh/music/john_brown.mp3|width=180]A chilling tale of a soldiers venture off to and return from war, as well as how his family reacts proudly at his decision to fight only to turn cold and bitter when he returns as a shell of his former self.
Lupe Fiasco: “Little Weapon”
Lupe speaks from the perspective of a child soldier in this track off his sophomore set, The Cool.
